Many families will instinctively rule out the idea of taking the kids on a far-
flung holiday to Cuba, for no reason other than they’ve come to believe it
wouldn’t be appropriate. Sadly however this is something of a classic case of
jumping to conclusions without any real knowledge of the matter, as in reality a
trip to exotic shores with the whole family can be a quite unique delight.

It’s another one of those situations whereby you’ll only ever hear of the horror
stories arising when things have gone terribly wrong – folk are generally
less likely to share their experiences or make headline news when all went
as planned. So, in the spirit of fair balance it really is about time that the
subject was clarified and approached from a rather more positive and realistic
standpoint – the following tip representing all there is to know about planning
and taking a truly wonderful trip to far-flung shores with the kids in-tow:

Before Booking

Research the available options thoroughly and bear in mind that every island
in the Caribbean offers a uniquely different experience and atmosphere. Some
are cultural meccas, some and throbbing party-scenes and others are practically
deserted, so be sure to opt for one that has something on offer for all the family.

Weather Checks

Another consideration that absolutely must be kept in mind if taking the private
route to booking is that of the time of year and the expected weather conditions.
Weather in the tropics can range to weeks of deluge rains to unbearable heat
and right through to some of the most powerful storms on Earth – check where
you’re going and what the annual weather cycle predicts.

Booking

Chances are a penny or two can be saved by booking everything privately, but
on the other hand those that do so will lose the safety, security and peace of
mind that comes with having an expert on-board for the ride. Book solo and
there’s nowhere to turn for advice or for help in a crisis – sometimes the extra
few quid is so very worth investing.

On the Journey

If flying overnight, make every effort to tire out the kids during the day and
bring enough comforts along to help them sleep the journey away in blissful
peace. If on the other hand the flight is a daytime service, bring sufficient toys,
games and distractions to while away the hours. Also, be sure to bring along
food and drink that won’t send them into the kind of sugar rushes and crashes
that breed tantrums at 37,000 feet.

At the Resort

Go with the flow – as in keep an eye on what it is that seems to impress the kids
and stick with it. You yourself might want to visit an ancient archaeological
site, but chances are the little ones would be much happier spending three hours
staring at a dead crab on the beach. Know where your priorities lie.

Health and Safety

Last but not least, never even think about hitting a resort with the kids before
first checking you’re insured up to the eyeballs and have a small arsenal of
contact details for local doctors, dentists, emergency services and so on.
