Teenagers enter adolescence as unspoiled lumps of clay that will soon be molded into adults. It is
important that they do not pick up any bad habits during their teen years, or they may have difficulty
ridding themselves of their bad habits later in life. Parents can be a big influence on their teenagers’
behavior. They can follow these three tips to help their teenagers avoid creating any bad habits that will
negatively impact their lives.

Talk to Them

One of the best ways to ensure that your teens do not pick up any bad habits is to always keep the lines
of communication open with them. This means always being open and honest with them about every
subject. Be frank and open about tricky subject matters like drug use, alcohol and sex. This will give
teenagers the faith in their parents that they need to approach them when they are faced with difficult
choices in their lives. When teenagers feel secure coming to their parents with problems, they will be
much more likely to avoid creating any bad habits that will harm them in the future.

Set Rules and Limits

When children enter adolescence, it is only natural that they will try and reestablish their boundaries.
They will test their limits to see what they are able to get away with, and that makes it crucial that
parents set rules and limits for their teenagers to follow. If teenagers do not face consequences when
they break the rules, then they will pick up the bad habit of feeling like their actions have few to no
consequences.

When it comes time to enforce the rules, always be consistent. Do not let things slide one day and come
down hard the next. Always be fair and firm, and teenagers will know what to expect. They will then
know how to successfully fit into society within the limits of acceptable behavior.

Stay Involved

One of the best ways to help teenagers create positive habits and avoid negative ones is to stay involved
in their lives. Volunteer to help with their extracurricular activities. Encourage them to invite their
friends over to your house. The more you can be involved in your teen’s life, the greater the chances
are that they will learn to live their lives in a positive manner. If you ever feel like you need help with a
