Myrtle beach is a great family vacation destination, but it has more then just miles of beautiful beaches.  For those who want to visit, but aren’t sure what to do beyond the beach and boardwalk (which are beautiful, and of course need to have ample time spent on them) let’s talk about the diverse and vivacious

There is an old side to this historic city that mixes smoothly with the beach side fun to create a one-of-a-kind destination you and your family will want to return to again and again.

The Myrtle Beach State Park Piers are said to be the best fishing spots in Myrtle Beach.  Popular with locals too, you don’t need to get a license ahead of time and fishing supplies are available on site for your convenience.  Bring your own poles, or there are some available for purchase or rental as well.  I think it’s vital for every kid to have at least one photo of themselves with “the catch of the day”, don’t you?  Something they caught themselves- with help from mom and dad, maybe.

The views from the piers are some of the best from the city, so even if you’re not fishing you’ll be glad you stopped by. Myrtle Beach State Park Pier is a quiet and green ( both literally and from an environmental standpoint) beach spot, that is actually an oceanfront maritime forest.  This spot is complete with campgrounds, nature trail, fishing, and more, you and your family will love this place.  If you are campers, you will want to make reservations- there is both traditional camping as well as cabins available on the property as well.   On site is a wonderful and well maintained educational center that is both hands on and fun for not only the children, but the adults in the group as well. One of the best centers of it’s kind I have seen in a park this size (and many bigger and better funded as well), this is a point of pride and passion of the local staff and ranger, and a real must-do when in the area.

The Carolina Opry is an fun filled show that takes it’s cues from old time vaudeville. It’s 2 hours are filled with a variety of acts, such as comedy, dancing, music of many genres, and more- you’re sure to have a great time watching 36 of the nations best performers.  All ages come together in the state of the art, 2200 seat theater, making it a show that the entire family (even grandparents) will enjoy. The artists are talented, versatile, and from a variety of backgrounds.  During the show, you can even see some of your favorite acts from TV,  like American Idol and America’s Got Talent.

The  Horry County Museum has recently had a huge renovation, as well as moved to a historical landmark. The Horry County museum has two American Civil War features as well as  it’s  two permanent-but-evolving exhibits. You and your family can visit  historical artifacts and watch films in the new 600-seat auditorium.  You can also sign up for walking tours of Conway’s historic district.  Very close by is the L.W. Paul Living History Farm, which is also worth a visit.  Go from the Civil War to the early 20th Century in just a few minutes. This 17-acre farm shows what life was like in Horry County from 1900-1955, and lets visitors experience that first hand. Not only can you watch, but you can take part in traditional farm activities like plowing, making soap, or milking cows. There is always something new to see and do at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm, and living history museums are almost always guaranteed hits with the kids.  This is a great way to spend the day, and who know- you all might just learn something!

After you get your fill of the beach and boardwalks- or as something special in between- make sure you visit some of the attractions that make Myrtle Beach truly special and will give your vacation a special flair, something that will make your trip that much more memorable.  There is so much to see and do (and eat) that you might just find yourself coming back again and again.

That’s one of my fave destinations, and I loved watching people fish last time I was there. Pretty cool you don’t need a license either.
