Review and #Giveaway from Educational Insights- not to be missed for parents and teachers :)

As a Pre-K teacher, there are some things I just take real pleasure in reviewing and writing up. Educational Insights is such a great company, making great (and fun!) educational toys and games, that I own more of their products then I could ever review. So lets start with some of their most fabulous and fun items, that have been delighting kids for some time, and now have been giving my Pre-K kids some educational enjoyment 🙂

Inside Out ™ Lenticular Human Body Poster
A seriously awesome poster for any science fan (I have one on my door in my room)! Don’t look away! A magical way to present the carious layers of the human body, the Lenticular Human Body Poster shifts from two kids to their skeletal systems, muscular systems, and organs. You won’t believe your eyes! Grades 1+/Ages 6+

Our Human Body week is not here yet- but you can be sure I will be bringing this in with me!

Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game
Your forest friends are hungry and they need your help! Spin the spinner, squeeze the matching colored acorn with your Squirrel Squeezers, and place it into your log. Be the first to your log with delicious acorns and you win! You could also spin “pick an acorn,” “steal an acorn,” or “lose an acorn,” so be strategic, little squirrel!
The kids had a great time with this game- they still are not bored with it, and the tweezers improve dexterity.  The rules are easy to explain and implement (and to understand!) so the kids can have fun and n ot be frustrated.

The perfect first microscope! Great for introducing scientific observation.
·  Features a dial children can turn to listen to fun facts about what they’re seeing on the slides
·  Challenges children to remember what they’ve learned in an electronic quiz game
·  Includes 12 prepared slides of common insects
·  Magnifies 5x and provides a light for easy, close-up viewing
·  Requires 3 C batteries, not included

Ages 5+/ Grades K+

The kids for realsies love this!   They can’t get enough, and I had to create a schedule for them to all get turns without driving me insane, LOL.  WOW is bug week going to be great!

Playfoam

The ONLY no-mess creativity substance for preschoolers!

Preschoolers are free to express their creativity — with no mess to clean up afterward! Just squish up the Playfoam®, shape it however you like, squash it back down, and start all over again. Playfoam® never dries out so the creativity never ends — and the secret no-stick formula means you can take it anywhere for creative fun on the go!

It does not dry out, no matter how long you leave it uncovered someplace.  I am going on nearly a month uncovered in the stockroom at the Pre-K- and it is still just fine.  Side note?  My son ate some- and I can tell you for sure it’s non-toxic.  Ugh.  First thing he ever ate that WASN’T food, LOL.

Educational Insights is currently giving away $100 EducationalInsights.com gift cards to one lucky person every weekday.   The offer is featured on our website (www.educationalinsights.com) and on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/educationalinsights) under the “WIN!” tab.

Win DVDs ‘Families of Philippines’ & ‘Families of Germany- Great Educational Kids DVDs!

Come spend time with four young citizens growing up in two of the most populous countries in the world in Families of Philippines and Families of Germany, the newest titles in the award-winning Families of the World series, venturing onto DVD September 20, 2011 from Master Communications.

The series – 27 titles and growing – enables future travelers to reach across the globe and visit
other people and cultures, all from a child’s point of view. Always focusing on two children from
differing households, one urban, one rural, and narrated by children, Families of the World DVDs invite
viewers to follow two families’ daily routines, introducing both the similarities and differences that exist
between them, as well as us.
The Southeast Asian country of the Philippines, known officially as the Republic of the
Philippines, is an archipelago consisting of over 7,100 islands, has the fifth longest coastline in the world
(over 22,500 miles), experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity and combines both Eastern and
Western cultures.

In Families of Philippines, meet 13-year old Khim, a boy who lives on the rural island of Cebu
with his grandparents, aunt and her two children. Living close to the coast, see the dozens of outrigger
boats Khim points out as he explains how the fisherman collect the fish that he and his family eat nearly
every night. Awaking early in the morning from his sleeping mat, Khim bathes, eats, and then makes the
10-minute walk to his public school, which boasts over 10,000 students. Studying plants, computers and
other subjects, his favorite class is science. On the way home from school, he stops in the local video
arcade to play games with his friends. Later at home, he completes his chores, which include feeding
their goats, collecting firewood and cooking the rice for dinner. A fan of dance and karate, Khim is an
active, happy boy!

Shahani, 7, lives in the capital city of Manila, a thriving city boasting many modern skyscrapers.
Living with her mom, dad and older sister, the early riser (5 a.m.!), gets help from mom getting started in
the morning before she’s off to school, where she wears a name tag to help the teachers with the over
5,000 students. During the 10 months she attends school, she studies English among other subjects.
Mom shops for fresh fish and vegetables every day while Dad works as a children’s costumed birthday
party entertainer and also teaches dance, which Shahani also studies (and excels – she won a local
competition and was featured on television). Enjoying adobo stew for dinner and mango for desert, she
and her sister welcome friends over in the evening for games and fun, then it’s off to bed for rest before
her big test the next day!

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a parliamentary republic consisting of 16
states, boasts one of the world’s largest economies and is the 14th most populous country in the world.
The divided parts of East and West Germany were united in 1990 after the celebrated destruction of the
Berlin Wall.

In Families of Germany, meet seven-year-old Sophia from the village of Reimershausen, who
lives with her parents, sister Johanna and brother Simon. After a breakfast of bread, cheese and jam made
from the fruit in their garden, she is off to school where she and her 19 classmates study English and
biology among other subjects. Sophia studies guitar after school when she’s not helping out at a
neighbor’s farm where twice a week she feeds cows and collects eggs from the chickens. Following
dinner, she heads back to school for crafts and skits. During the weekend her family eats breakfast
together, then enjoys activities – this particular weekend they are celebrating St. Martin’s Day, visiting
Marburg Castle and attending her sister’s choral concert. A bedtime story from mom and dad and it’s off
to sleep!

Ole is ten years old and lives in the capital city of Berlin with his parents, two brothers and two
tortoises. It’s Halloween, so we get to tag along as Ole carves pumpkins, prepares treats for his neighbors
before taking two trains to spend the day uptown, where we see conversation bikes, Segues and tour boats
on the river. Upon their return, they head out for some trick-or-treating. The next day it’s back to school
where Ole studies English and math while his dad, an engineer, works at a jet plane factory and mom
teaches at an animal museum. After school it’s time for homework and dinner before heading off to
handball practice. It’s been a long day, so bedtime is a welcome event!

Families of the World is recommended for ages 5-11 and retails for $29.95. The series features
families in Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Ghana, Guatemala,
India, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico (includes Spanish and English soundtrack) and More Mexico,
Panama, Puerto Rico, Russia, Sweden, Thailand, the USA, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam
Each DVD includes a free PDF Teacher’s Guide, which features the script, copy-ready maps,
discussion and activity guides, recipes, glossaries and more. To order Families of the World DVDs,
call 1-800-765-5885 or visit www.familiesoftheworld.com.

I love this series- they are great to introduce kids to the world, other cultures, and get them interested in travel.  I also love how handy and easily used for a classroom environment they make these for teachers.  I think these are a must have for anyone who wants their child to be a  citizen of the world, not just of their own backyard.

Sight Words- Learn with Rock ‘N Learn! Contest

Rock ‘n Learn teaches kids using music.
“Rock ‘N Learn began as an idea that would help children learn by putting educational material to music with a current sound — the kind of music that kids enjoy and find motivating. Now with over 50 products, we have sold millions of audio/book and video programs to teachers and parents throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries.
Rock ‘N Learn programs helps students learn math, phonics, reading, early childhood, social studies, Spanish, test-taking strategies, writing, and science. Our DVDs incorporate music with exciting, colorful imagery.”

The kids really enjoy it, and it is really cute when they start singing along.  When kids are enjoying what they are learning, they are more likely to retain the information being presented- not to mention that they are more likely to pay attention!  My Pre-K class does our own sight words several times a week, and it was interesting to see how they responded to “other” sight words.  We use the local Kindergarten’s list to go on.  These words were a bit different, and were certainly presented to them in a different way then I do.  They loved it from the first few minutes.

The kids thought it was fun, and they got upset when I turned it off before it was over.  (Hey- it was lunchtime!)  I told them I would let them watch the rest later- and they were asking for it as soon as they woke up from nap.  They even said they would watch it instead of going outside!  I said no, they had to go outside- it’s important for kids to be active- but that I would skip doing OUR afternoon sight words and finish the DVD that day, as a special treat.  (OOOOh, how nice of me- letting them learn sight words instead of sight words!  LOL)

We have done these sight words in addition to our sight words since seeing the video that day.  They are so excited to learn more words, it makes me feel good.  And they sing along, and are learning the new words very quickly.  We only do the Rock ‘n Learn sight words if we do our weekly ones well- so it is motivation for the kids to try their best.

Here is a little more information about Sight Words
“Sight words are the most frequently used words in the English language, and this DVD helps students learn to read them automatically. As a supplement to phonics-based strategies, Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words boosts reading and spelling skills. Children learn over 60 sight words through engaging characters, entertaining songs, and fun practice. Words are presented in context to help build reading comprehension. Includes all pre-primer Dolch words, the top 20 from Fry’s, and more. A bonus section helps kids with word shapes and spelling skills. “

Dinosaur World- a MUST SEE when traveling!

Those are my kids near the feet!!!

What child doesn’t love dinosaurs?  There is just something about them that appeals to almost every child that I know.  Dinosaur World is something a bit out of the ordinary- part museum, part dino-shopping-center, but mostly- a fun activity-based adventure to have with your little ones.  Dinosaur World in Cave City, Kentucky, is a great way to spend the day.  The idea of spending the whole day with all sorts of pre-historic beasts was just too exciting for my Little Man. Walking amongst dinosaurs?  Not just bones?  Well, that seemed almost too good to be true for a little boy, the day before he turned four years old!  (We even got to dig for our own fossils, which all children get to keep!  How is that for fun?)

Check out who is INSIDE the dino’s mouth!  🙂

There are true-to-life sized dinosaur re-creation statues, each made by an employee of Dinosaur World and based on the most current scientific information available.  They are made of fiberglass, steel, and concrete.  Dinosaur World Park officials consulted with European open-air Dinosaur Museum owner, as well as experts on prehistoric life to create these models.
Dreamed up by a European businessman, and first opened in Plant City, Florida, there are now three Dinosaur World locations you can visit.  (The third is in Glen Rose, Texas.)  Not just any other day in the park- here you will be face to face (or at times, knee to face!) with your favorites dinosaurs, mammoths, and prehistoric eggs, nests, and more!

Dinosaur World has over 150 life sized dinosaur creations, placed in a natural and wooded setting.  This was quite appreciated by yours truly during that Kentucky heat wave!  You will see both well known and favorite species, such as the most famous dinosaur of all (the mighty T-rex!)  as well as the lesser known varieties, and mammoths, too.  I was thrilled that they included less familiar species, it gave us more to read about when we got home.  This has already inspired more then one library trip, and many art projects.  Not just coloring, either!  Shadow boxes, models, you name it, my children are very excited.  We wrote down names of dinosaurs we didn’t know at all or very well, and the expedition to learn about them has continued.

With my Pre-School class’ graduation theme being “dinosaurs”, this came at a great time for my children, because dinosaurs are fresh in their minds, and they were excited to see the dinosaurs we had been learning about.  As fans of educational TV shows like “Dino Dan” and “Dinosaur Train”, like so many other children their age, it was great for them to see the “real” version of the dinosaurs they love to watch on the television.  “Buddy” is a little scary in reality!  LOL
Traditional Museums are wonderful for showing dinosaurs, but they only show pictures and bones.  I highly suggest that if you get the chance, take a trip to the Dinosaur World nearest you.  It will be an adventure your children will talk about for a long time to come, and none of you will forget.

Special note for teachers and parents!  You can have your child’s birthday at Dinosaur World for only 6$ a child, and all educational trips are only 5$ per person.  You sure can’t shake a stick at that!  If we had one of these in my area, I sure know where I would have been having Little Man’s birthday.  Not to mention, what a great day trip for my Pre-K class!

Don’t forget to follow on Twitter and Facebook and keep up with all the fun  🙂

Happy exploring!

Disclosure- I visited Dinosaur World free of charge in order to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own.

Learn Spanish with Boca Beth! Win Kid’s Prize Pack

Boca Beth is a fun, interesting way to introduce your child to a new language, or brush up and practice your child’s Spanish.  My own Spanish is faltering at best, LOL, it used to be much better!  But I do want Little Man to learn it from a young age, so I have been playing Spanish music and children’s DVDs since he was a baby for him.

Studies show that children who are exposed to second languages from a young age have a better chance of retaining them, and at fluency.  They also tend to have higher IQs, and have a better chance at learning more languages as well.  More jobs will be open to speakers of multiples languages.  Not to mention travel being easier, and being able to communicate with more people, more easily.  With all these things that can only benefit your child- why wouldn’t you want them to learn a foreign language?   🙂

Boca Beth is really two “people”- founder Beth Butler, who writes and preforms the songs, and “Boca”, the puppet.
Combine the two to create a fun pair of language dynamos, ready to entertain and teach your child all about the Spanish language, and even some culture.  There are music CDs with fun beats and rhythms, DVDs, workbooks, Boca puppets, and more!  Check out the website and see all the options that Boca Beth can offer your child.  You can buy just one, a few, or bundle and save.  A few of the parents here were so happy with Boca Beth being used here in the classroom to help teach their kids a foundation in Spanish (where the kids just love it!) and then the kids using their new Spanish words at home, that they asked me for more information.  Sometimes, the proof really is just in the pudding, so to speak.  And when I give the kids the choice of which Spanish DVD they would like to watch, they almost always choose “BOCA!!!!”

Here is a bit more information on Boca Beth-
“My goal now is to create better communication within our increasingly diverse society by providing the youth of today a fun and easy introduction to Spanish and English with music, movement and creativity.  I spent more than 15 years in preschool and elementary school classrooms prior to having our daughter and have now committed myself to focus on sharing The Boca Beth Program that now features four bilingual music CDs in Spanish and English, three bilingual educational movies, a fun coloring/activity book in both languages, puppets and musical shakers.

You can buy various Boca Beth products HERE!

One Lucky winner will also receive a Boca Beth bilingual music CD and DVD combo set, with a coloring activity book.  The CD is the Sing Along with Boca Beth music CD shown here plus the I Like Animals DVD shown here and the book shown here.  Total value of the set is $36.00.

Back To School! Win a great outdoor explorer kit from Learning Resourcs

It’s August, so you know what that means!  Yes, it’s hot, LOL.  I can think of two things that August brings- back to school preparations, and BUGS!  Buggies, buggies, everywhere.  While this is super-lame when the mosquito come out, it’s great for grabbing a magnifying glass and mason jar and going on a bug hunt!  You can even identify your finds with a bug-book before letting them go again.
I recently had the opportunity to check out a great product that puts a fun, new modern twist on this classic summer pastime- the Big View Bug Jars by Learning Resources.

“It is a bug jar and magnifying glass all in one!  They come in a box with 6 containers, each a different colored ladybug that spreads its wings to show you the bug within at a magnified view.
Adorable jars feature ladybug wings that open to invite little learners to investigate insects. “

  • Supports scientific observations with a 3.5x magnifying lens, hidden under the bug’s wings
  • Engages even those children who shy away from bugs, thanks to cute (and secure) design
  • Features screw-on cap and air vents for live-critter observation
  • Durable plastic jars measure 4.5″H x 3.5″ in diameter
  • Grades PreK+

Little Man had so much fun with these, and they are sure to be a hit in my classroom for “Bug Week”.  Back to School is for teachers, too!  We need to be ready for our classes, and projects, activities, and all that goes with it.
You can also use them with your kiddos for projects, identification, show and tell, or just exploring the great outdoors.  Any child from Pre-School age on up to about 9 or 10 would have not only a fun time, but also an educational one with these fun Big View Bug Jars!

Make exploring even cooler with the Early Science Explorer set, with a magnifying glass and washable, plastic, easy grip tweezers-  great for picking up all those things momma won’t let him touch!  And for helping to grab those wiggly bugs, sticks, his dad’s finger when he is not looking….LOL
Little Man LOVED the set, and carried them all around, to school, camping, to the park- you name it!

“Encourage young scientists to take their investigations further with these perfectly sized tools!”

  • Includes durable magnifier with built-in stand for hands-free observation, 4.5x magnification, and 4 1/2″ diameter viewing area
  • Exercises fine motor skills as children use the easy-grip tweezers—depressions on the colorful 6″ tweezers guide small hands into the proper pincer position
  • Washable plastic; colors may vary
  • Grades PreK+

Win Wisharoo Park, an educational and adorable prize pack!

My son has a new favorite DVD- Wisharoo Park!  If you have not heard of it (or if you have, but have not watched it yet), let me tell you how very much he enjoys it, and why I think you will, too.  It became a fast favorite, and he carried around the little pamphlet that it came with for days.  I love it’s message, and the characters are lovable, sweet, and adorable.  I hope they come out with stuffed animals soon, my son would just love them, LOL.  Of course, I had to bring it to the Pre-School to see what the kids had to say.  The ages of the kids here are 2.5 to 6.  Wisharoo Park was create for children aged 3 to 6, so the majority of the kids fall right within that demographic.

Originally airing as a TV series on PBS, Wisharoo Park has now launched as a multi-media program, with a website, Facebook Page, and DVDs.  This technology based program and curriculum promotes positive self image and self esteem, and helps children feel good about themselves while discovering and understanding their personal strengths.
Wisharoo Park’s online community updates weekly with new activities, videos, games, and a whole lot more.  There you can also interact with the aforementioned adorable buddies of Wisharoo Park.  You can also look forward to an iPad app which is designed to complement your child’s learning and preschool curriculum, coming soon.

I am so excited to see what else Wisharoo Park comes up with, because I know that I love it, my kids love it, and the kids in the preschool love it as well.  It is fun to use as a “break” or on a rainy day (or for wintry snowy days) to break up time when we can’t get outside and play.  While we often do yoga, kids dance and exercise videos, and other physical activity- it’s nice to have options that are educational, and are great for social and personal learning as well.  For me- whatever gives kids a love of learning, and confidence in themselves (which is really half the battle, isn’t it?) is a great choice and a good buy.  I hope you check out Wisharoo Park soon, it is super-Have Sippy recommended!
