Get Fit America for Kids LIVE Contest- Win the DVD

I love this DVD for the kids at the Pre-K and in my own home- it’s great to have a physical activity to do on rainy days, in the winter, and just to relax and unwind together.  Because sometimes?  I just don’t want to go down the slide!  LOL  I have used this DVD at least weekly since I got it, and it has been a “go to” for me at the Pre-School.  Can I tell you?  When there is 20+ kids that need to go outside and can’t, this is a real saving grace for me!

Kids can learn some great heath and fitness ideas from this DVD, get on the path to staying active and healthy, and start out on the right foot- being active- or for those kids who need some motivation?  They can do so with the caring guidance of Mom/Dad and the instructor Scott Cole.   And you can learn with your child- this is a great opportunity for a  family activity, so join in!
My kids and class are aged 2.5 – 7, and only the 2 year olds were unable to follow.  But they had fun trying, and I think it is a great example for them to see.  Plus, they will learn the “moves” and exercises in time- plus it is a great way to start them out on the right foot- by watching older siblings, and mom and dad!  (Plus- Scott makes it fun- so your kids won’t dislike doing this!)
Get Fit America for Kids LIVE features active school assemblies with children of all ages (K-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-8th) joyfully participating in Scott’s proven program of Yoga, Tai Chi, Cardio, Strength, Partnered Trust-Building, and Meditation, along with valuable educational tips and insights for each age group on HOW to motivate, teach, and MOVE children with mind/body exercise.

NOTE: Get Fit America for Kids LIVE DVD is an educational tool for adults, and the NAPPA-AWARD-Winning Get Fit America for Kids Workout DVD is designed for kids to use as a workout. Together, the Get Fit America for Kids Program is a mindful solution to help prevent ADHD, improve focus, restore social skills, and inspire overall health and vitality for children of all ages, while educating adults on HOW TO implement mindful exercise into schools, fitness centers, recreational facilities, and more!!!

Get Fit America for Kids: Inspiring Conscious Happy Active Children

Get Fit America for Kids: Inspiring Conscious Happy Active Children

By Scott Cole

I have been working with children since 1986, and in those early years I worked
with suicide prevention teens in the Dallas area—to this date the toughest audience
in my career. I mention this because sometimes adults feel that a child may just
be “lost” and that what we are doing for them is perhaps not “breaking through” and
never will.

Believe me, that is a common feeling to have, and certainly faced with what we
see in America today—children who are morbidly obese, diabetic, medicated, and
experiencing ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), it is no wonder that
adults and parents feel frustrated, which seems to be pushing us farther from what
we need to be doing—and that is reversing this ugly sad uninspired trend of cutting
time and funds for music, art, and physical education.

I can share unequivocally that when given the chance to move, express, and learn
something new and different like Yoga and Tai Chi, children respond, not always
when and how you want them to, but trust me, the seeds are planted and these
mindful movement programs make a huge difference. By the end of my term with
the suicide prevention teens, I remember one girl coming up to me, hugging me
crying, “Don’t leave, I love it when you come see us.” I never forgot that.

Let us consider what are children are NOT getting:

1) Healthy, organic, soil-grown food that for the most part could prevent adult-
onset diabetes and obesity.

2) Movement in all forms: Dance, Yoga, Tai Chi, Physical Education and PLAY
every day. Children NEED to breathe, move, express, scream, and ultimately
experience healthy quiet time.

3) Nature Experience: Outdoors, or certainly learning about Nature
through “field trips” as we used to call them.

4) Healthy levels of TOUCH, both from adults and their peers. Activities that
involve touch and physical/social communication are needed now more than
ever as children bury their heads in video games, computers, cell phones,
instead of looking into the eyes of their friends and touching each other in
healthy play or activity.

5) Support at home and in school: The United States is #36 on the longevity list
worldwide (tied with Cuba according to the United Nations list), and is the
most obese nation on Earth. This translates into adults who have the same
issues in charge of making decisions to prevent the current generation from

having the problems we have.

America’s current in-home and educational landscape isn’t coming close to any
viable solution until concerned adults (WE) take charge of it at ALL levels.

Let us consider addressing what children today NEED:

1) First off, we need to make it MANDATORY that organic REAL food is served
in schools, and have the children take an active part in learning about food,
crops, and conscious farming. No more corn subsidized fructose corn syrup in
drinks and fruit cocktails, no more packaged nutrient-less slop, no more low-
quality after-thought beef and chicken fingers, and all soda machines should be
eliminated. Not the most popular decision I know, but AMERICA IS ADDICTED
to this “STUFF” that isn’t real food, and our bodies are in rebellion. If children
had normal levels of blood sugar, and are not doctored up by medication or
addictive fast-food and sugars, ADHD would be reduced and we would start to
see healthy alert, active children re-emerging. The problem arises in budget and
corporations that bid for these contracts, promising more for less dollars, and
inevitably it is about profit, not about providing great food for our kids.

If anything should be subsidized by the government, it should be food
for our public schools, but organized by a non-corporate committee of
nutritionists, parents, organic farmers, and educators.

2) Next, we need to implement all forms of movement and PE in schools: Yoga,
Tai Chi, Sports, Kickball, and Creative Play. We just need to get our kids moving
and playing again! Whoever decided that eliminating PE would make our
children “study more” has never dealt with children. Once children play, emote,
and express, they are more likely to actually WANT to sit down and read a book,
study, or be quiet.

3) Children need to learn more about their surroundings, from farming to crops
to geography to nature. Whenever I do the Get Fit America in-school assemblies,
I teach barefoot, and if allowed by the school, the children are allowed to take
their shoes off too. This ALONE is a big adventure that gets the children excited
to play and learn. It still amazes me that something so natural and simple is not
the norm anymore. We talk about feeling the earth, listening to and becoming
aware of Nature, and how our bodies are designed to touch and feel through the
feet and hands, all incorporated with the movement and exercise.

4) Touch is vital for any person. Touch deprivation can contribute to depression,
loneliness, and anti-social behavior that can manifest in a lifetime of discomfort
around others. After I have the children moving for awhile in the school
assemblies, I then introduce a Partnered section of the program where the
children get to touch, do mirrored-image movement, and learn to stretch and

trust each other. I tell them, “If you let go of your partner you are letting go of
yourself.” Most of them get the lesson.

5) Adults need to do their part and understand that even if we don’t get the
lessons of healthy living, it is VITAL for us to make choices that will influence our
children for the better.

American obesity is an addiction, and adult onset diabetes is preventable, so
unless we want to watch people age, become medically dependent, become
lethargic, depressed, and inactive, then we need to turn this big ship around and
get back on course to dock in an environment that will have clean pure water,
organic healthy food, mindful exercise and creative encouragement as standard
fuel for a healthy life.

Parents, teachers, educators, and concerned adults need to play an active part in
each community, as part of an expressive society that both honors and cherishes
our children enough to give them the tools to become the healthiest, most
mindful, articulate, compassionate generation ever.

EA SPORTS Active 2- Good Idea for Dad!

Hey there and welcome to Daddy’s Corner!  For any of you new readers, that means that this post is by daddy- me!  But Mom says to mention that this is a GREAT idea for Father’s Day- and I concur!
EA is one of the biggest most well known video game publishers out right now.  They make some great titles, including: Mass Effect, John Madden Football, and SSX ( I personally can’t wait for the newest installment of SSX, I love this game, go Kaori!!)  One of their newest franchise is EA Active.  Active is EA’s jump into the exercise/ self help genre.  It acts as both and exercise program as well as a life-style tool.  The exercises are varied and go from simple warm ups and stretches to running/biking/squats.  Also the graphics are very good, you can very clearly see exactly what should be done next, and your personal trainer (I picked Devon, seems like a cool cat) is quite good at showing you how to do each workout properly.  The backgrounds are also varied and gorgeous, from sprawling deserts to flowing waterfalls.  What I enjoyed about the workouts is they are varied.  Warm ups are just that, to stretch you out before burning those calories.  They also vary in intensity and length, from a quick 10 minutes cardio burn to longer 45 minute sessions.  You can pick a mountain to conquer on bike, pumping your feet and doing squats to do jumps and tricks or maybe off road skateboarding, with balancing and speed controlled by how deeply you squat and jump.
A great tool included in Active 2 is the calender, not only does this game help you workout but also helps you figure out when you should be working out and helps you fit exercise in your schedule.

There are also tips on eating and life style changes.  An exercise routine isn’t the only portion of a healthy life as you all know.  Burgers for three meals a day and EA Active will still lead to problems down the line.  As you work out and progress through your routine, number one you feel better, and number two it actually rewards you with medals and trophies, Even PlayStation trophies so all your on-line buddies can see how well you are doing.
There are lots of features included in Active 2.  One of the most prominent ones is the new body tracking feature and heart monitor.  (Both of which are included.)  These looks like arm bands with small mp3 player on them.  Very easy to put on and hardly noticeable once in place.  The sensors are very responsive and pick up your motion easily.  Even in the most cardio intensive workouts, where you are running in place, pumping your arms and hoping up and down doing squats.
I know this is a minor feature but still one I really like, custom playlists.  You can rip your mp3s off your cd’s or copy them off your mp3 player, you can import a playlist into the game.  Don’t like the hip hop or electronic music included?  Change it up.  Get pumped with some classic Queen, or maybe some rocking Live, according to the wife.  The choice is yours.  I found myself building my next playslist as a cool down after my workout more often then not.   🙂

We have the PlayStation 3 version of EA Active 2 and I can definitely see myself using it regularly.  It looks like it could be a nice change of pace from blowing up alien space ships and saving the world.  Saving myself from an early demise sounds like a good idea as well.
Until next time- Daddy

Cocochia

We all want to live healthy, get in shape, and feel great.  But what happens when we get that  craving for something sinfully delicous?  Well here is a good solution, coconut.  Well Living Fuel thought of this first.  Living Fuel Cocochia Ultimate Snack Mix is a mix of raw organic coconut, chia seeds and probiotics.  This mix is both healthy and delicous.  It has a touch of sweet, a touch of crunchy and of course that wonderful coconut flavor when you need to indulge.  But this snack mix is actually VERY good for you.  It is rich in Omega-3’s, medium chain triglycerides and fiber while still being a low-glycemic snack.  I personally love coconut and thought this product was very good- but it’s so high in fat I gave it all to Little Man, who doesn’t need to worry about such things!  🙂

We also tried out the CocoChia Sustained Energy Bar.  This bar is not like those other almost inedible bars you find on store shelves.  These are very good.  Almost too good.  The flavors are spot on.  Not only that but this is a raw food bar which includes: chia seeds, a great source of energy, omega-3s and omega-6s, Agave Syrup, which adds the sweet that is safe for diabetics, and non-GMO rice protein, which adds the raw fuel your body needs.

Another fun product line Living Fuel has is their protein shake mixes.  These were quite good and very filling.  As a meal ont he go these worked perfect,  Just two scoops a quick shake and you have a healthy fast meal without the ‘fast-food’ grease.  The blends are: SuperBerry, SuperGreens, and LivingProtein.  The hubs likes these a lot.

All products made by Living Fuel are organic, which rules.

Stover- a book with good eating habits for your kiddo!

Stover is an interesting book written by Kathy Brodsky.  For starters it stars a pig who goes by the name StoverStover is not a big fat pig, but features a pig who is trying to eat better, stay fit and in general be a little healthier.  I think a very interesting point in the book is when the main character is happy with not seeing an real difference in the way she looks.  This is a very realistic interpretation of what happens when working out for the first, even up to the third-forth week of working out.  Any difference will be slow and steady, but well worth it.  Most exercises for kids books would show a dramatic change quickly, but is unrealistic and when kids actually do try to be healthy they expect fast change right now!  (and reminds us of the same- and helps kid understand healthy eating habits and the importance of being active.)  Thanks, Stover for showing kids how to live healthy by eating right and exercising , not crash dieting.
AND- good thoughts for the kids, and good reinforcement if you are (like me) trying to be healthier, and improve your life and the life of your family  🙂

Cardio Barre- weight loss and toning

I have a secret weapon. I do.
So, I have been talking about my weight loss, and I am still trying to lose about 30 more pounds. Since January, as you know, I have lost just over 22 lbs. Lately I have been posting about more things that I have been doing, using, and posting progress pictures. But- this is (so far) my #1.
The most fantastic weight loss and toning product- I love it so much. It’s called Cardio Barre!

I have been using it at least twice a week since February. It is not so easy, though! You will have to work. It’s not wild and bombastic, like some of those over the top (for me) videos you see- flying all over the place and rolling all about. BUT- it is really, really difficult, because it works muscles you may not often use, and you will work on your balance as well. Even if you do yoga, like me- it’s still a new bunch of movements, and you may have trouble finding your center at first. Take your time! I totally didn’t do the whole video the first few times, and I still don’t look graceful, LOL.
All the people in the video are ballet dancers- and look it. I HATE THAT! I wish fitness producers used more “real” people instead of perfect ones, it always makes me feel inferior and kind of puts me off. The good news? Even though you may not be a size 0- you can do this. You can! I was a size 16 when I started. Yep! I’m a real person. I have never taken a dance class, either. Not even as a kid.
I don’t have a perfect body. But, I want to have a body that is perfect for me, that I am happy with. My goal is not to be a size 0. I like to eat. 🙂 And I don’t want to be hungry and cranky all the time, LOL.
I just want to look and feel good!
