Healthy Alternatives to Junk Food for Kids Lunches

While most kids will put up with a sandwich and a piece of fruit in their lunch box,
they probably go for the “good” stuff first when the bell rings to announce the lunch hour.
This means that they’re filling up on chips, soda, candy, and whatever else you put in as
extras before they ever reach for the healthy items that are actually going to give them
some nutrients and offer the sustained energy they’ll need to make it through the end of
the school day. Of course, the reason for this is that the high volume of sugar, salt, and
fat in these items makes them very tasty, and our brains are programmed to stimulate
pleasure centers. If you put that stuff in your child’s lunch, he’s sure to eat it first. Sadly,
school lunches are not much better, with low-cost and less-than-fresh options generally
populating the assembly line of slop. So what can concerned parents do to ensure that
their kids are eating healthy? Here are a couple of options.

For starters, stop buying junk! You might think that it’s not so bad if your kid has it
once in a while, but the truth is that these substances are addictive. You’ve no doubt
heard the Lays potato chips catchphrase: No one can eat just one! This is because it
takes very little exposure for our bodies to begin craving the instant energy boost that
often accompanies snack foods and drinks. And the crash that follows all too soon only
makes us want more. Soon other, healthier foods become less desirable. But in your
home you have the power to control what your kids are eating. [Read more…]

Slow Cooker Meat Sauce Recipe

This is a really easy slow cooker sauce you can do on a busy day. I mostly use fresh tomatoes, since my garden is in full bloom right now, but since most don’t grow or even can tomatoes I’m giving the version that uses store bought jars.To make it really pop though dicing up a few tomatoes and adding them in to the sauce- it will add a bunch of flavor! My kids love this meaty sauce. I chop a lot of extra vegetables in there, zucchini works best just chop them up and toss in the sauce to cook!

Ingredients

1lb ground beef

1/2lb Italian sausage

1 chopped green bell pepper

1 chopped red bell pepper

1 onion diced

6 gloves garlic chopped and minced

4 jars diced tomatoes (14oz)

1 can tomato sauce (15 pz)

Top 5 Tips for Teaching Your Kids How to Cook

Do you ever have moments on the way home where you find yourself thinking (or
perhaps even saying out loud), “I wish that someone else could cook tonight.” And
then you think about the fact that your spouse will be home late (and really is better at
breakfast foods, anyway) and that the only time your kids step foot into the kitchen is to
eat (or get something to eat).

It’s for this reason alone, that if your children are of elementary school age, they are
definitely old enough to start learning the basics when it comes to cooking. Sure, they
may not be able to do any Thai food recipes any time soon, but with a bit of consistent
instruction and a lot of patience, some basic meals can be taught; meals that will be able
to give you at least a night off every once in a while.

If you’re looking for some great tips on how to teach your kids how to cook, here are
some really good ones that will have them begging to be in the kitchen for more reasons
other than rummaging through the fridge.

Get them excited about (preparing) food. Do you remember when
you first started teaching your kids how to eat? You tried different kinds until you figured
out which ones they liked and which ones they didn’t, right? When it comes to providing
your children with the motivation that they need to start cooking, it’s a good idea to follow
a similar formula. Ask them what kinds of food that they enjoy. If it’s Mexican, go with
some tacos. If it’s pizza, that’s pretty easy to make too. This brings us to the next point.

Start off easy. You don’t want to overwhelm them with lots of
reading and measuring, so start off with recipes that [Read more…]

This is one of my all time favorite summer quesadillas. The kids don’t like the peppers or green onions so you don’t have to add those in there. Find a salsa you like, if you like spicy go for it, you want mild have at it. Make it up as you go! This makes a wonderful appetizer or lunch for busy summers.

Ingredients

about 2 cups of shredded chicken which had slow cooked in the crock pot the day before.

1/2 cup chopped green onions

1/4 cup chopped sun dried tomatoes

1/4 cup chopped roasted red bell peppers

flour tortillas

Vidalia Onion and Bacon Warpped Steak

This is a recipe of my husbands evil brain. It is NOT healthy, or good for you in any way. Well, the onions might be a bit good for you, but cooked the way they are I very much doubt it. This recipe is not for the faint of heart or high of cholesterol.

It is inspired by Vidalia Onions, recently brought home from recent travels. Can’t get any fresher, now can you? LOL. The Vidalia onion, which can only be produced IN Vidalia, Georgia, are sweeter than other onions.
Vidalia onion growers have protected their brand, and today all onions labelled Vidalia must be grown in one of thirteen different counties in Georgia or in specific portions of seven other counties. Bet you chef’s didn’t know that! Read on for the bacon and onion-filled recipe 🙂

Bacon wrapped steak with Vidalia Onions

3 pieces of fillet Mignon (half pound), as little cartilage as possible, cut about an inch and a half thick
half pound thickly cut bacon
1 Vidalia Onion
your favorite spice rub
teaspoon olive oil

Cut onion into quarter inch pieces, you want to be able to get a piece per fork full or so.
Next take a slice of bacon and cut it half, put olive oil, half slice bacon and onions in large frying pan.
Let cook uncovered on low heat.

While the onions are cooking, put your favorite dry rub on your steak pieces, we used a Cajun spice [Read more…]

@Fritolay Chips Review and Giveaway

It’s summer time, which means BBQ’s and time to hang out with friends. With so many get togethers, there is a need for snacks. There are two basic categories of snacks -healthy and not healthy. Of the not healthy category, there is salty and sweet. Personally I like salty, be it potato chips, pretzels, nuts, etc.
Frito Lay has a whole plethora of new flavors and even textures to try out.

First up lets take a look at Ruffles Ultimate Kickin Jalapeno Ranch potato chips. These chips are from the new line of deeper thicker chips meant to stand up to the thickest of dips and not crumble under the pressure. Does it actually work? We will get tinto that in a bit. The flavor of these is unique and interesting, in a very good way. The ranch is a bit muted and not over powering, and the jalapeno is more of a side note, where the spice is less of a main player in your mouth, and you get more of that fresh jalapeno flavor. The chips are perfect for dipping. Not only are they built to hold up to big dips, but the flavoring is also meant to be a great side note to a dip. These work quite well with a nice french onion dip or even a dill spinach dip. I would not suggest a ranch dip, because that might be a bit too much ranch for one sitting. But hey, if ranch is your thing, go for it.

Up next we have some new corn chips from Tostitos. First up we have Scoops, these tortilla chips are bowl shaped and can fit quite the large amount of salsa. [Read more…]

Popped Corn Review and Giveaway

This snack is all natural, gluten free, and has brown rise syrup as a main ingredient. These three characteristics of a snack might turn away most snackers, But I dare you to try some popped corn by G.H.Cretors and tell me it isn’t some of the best popped corn you have aver tasted.

G.H Cretors has been making popped corn since 1885. In this time period a lot has changed, but the quality of their popped corn stayed the same. For five generations, they have been cooking caramel in copper pots, exactly measuring the right time to add the best cheddar cheese, and also roasting their own nuts.
This time honed tradition has led to some of the tastiest popped corn imaginable. We had the find pleasure of trying out a few flavors and have each picked a favorite.

For my husband it was the Chicago mix, cheddar cheese popped corn mixed with caramel popped corn. This combo might not sound good to some, but if you think about it- there are two things a snacker craves, either salty or sweet. This combo [Read more…]
