About Big Apple Circus
(Will Maitland Weiss, Executive Director; Guillaume Dufresnoy, Artistic Director)
Conceived and founded by Paul Binder and Michael Christensen to be a leading presenter of live family entertainment and a nonprofit performing arts institution, our nation-wide performances and community programs have made our 38-year history far-reaching and full. It all began in 1974, when American entertainers Binder and Christensen became juggling partners and took to the street corners of Europe. Their comedic juggling act was a hit, and they soon found themselves on the stage of the prestigious Nouveau Cirque de Paris. They returned home to America in 1976 with a vision: to entertain and improve the lives of millions of American children and families. One year later, they found a site for the first tent-raising in Battery Park, New York, and went on to create the award-winning, nonprofit Big Apple Circus. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Circus XTREME

We just saw the new Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show, Circus XTREME.  My son loves the circus, and this year did not disappoint. With amazing circus acts, incredible performers who are able to twist and turn their bodies in ways that most of us can’t even imagine, and acts that make you wonder if your eyes are deceiving you- Ringling Brothers truly is the “greatest show on earth”.

The circus you have loved since your own childhood is back and ready for you to make memories with your children.  Every child should see the circus, and this is a show not to be missed. If you get there early, there is a pre-show available for one hour before the circus begins, where your family can interact with performers.  Try juggling, take photos with performers, and meet the clowns you will shortly see performing.

pic8The All Access Pre-show is free with your ticket purchase. You and your family can meet the international cast of performers and get up close to the menagerie of animals. Try on custom costumes, learn circus skills — like juggling and walking the low wire — from the famous Ringling Bros.® Clown Alley and even have the opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind masterpiece created by one of our very own Ringling Bros. painting pachyderms.

Big Apple Circus – Get Your Tickets Now!

pic8We recently saw the Big Apple Circus, in Bridgewater, NJ for a limited time.  My son loves the circus, and this one is big enough to have amazing acts, while being small enough that no seat is a bad seat (none are more then 50 feet from the ring) and you have a real “family feel” to the whole experience.

His favorites were the animal acts.  He loved the horses and camels, joined by miniature ponies and alpacas.  We took a quick Vine video if you want to check it out-

They did this cool thing with draped fabric to give it a “merry-go-round” feel as the animals pranced in a circle, which was very cool.  If only we got more then 15 seconds of video, ha.  He loved this act.  He missed the dogs from last year, but that’s what keeps the circus fresh- new acts, right?

My husband loved the contortionists, 2 adult women were able to fit themselves into a small box- it was amazing!  There were so many wild things that these people were able to do, it really was astounding. There was a family that is 9th generation circus performers who did several acts that were really something- each one different, and one act that they performed together.  This is one show that is something that I would recommend to any family.  The ticket prices are really reasonable, as are souvenir toys and the food and beverages- you won’t be gouged like you will at some places.

Ringling Brothers Circus, Coming to a Town Near You

03 20 14 046Last night, we headed on over to the IZOD Center to see the “Greatest Show On Earth”- The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baily Circus.  I personally love the circus, and would go see it even without kiddos.  What can I say, it’s a feel good kind of thing.  I used to think I was going to be in the circus when I was a kid- like, really and truly.  I may or may not have developed what may or may not be a somewhat “interesting” fascination” with all things circus.  So, now that you all know I’m odd (which really, you should have figured out by now), let’s talk about why the circus is awesome.

03 20 14 049What’s not to love?  Amazing acts, cute and funny animals performing with their trainers, people twisting and turning their bodies into insane shapes and contortions and doing things that literally make me spaz out in my seat because I’m worried they are going to fall or crash and crack their heads (don’t worry, they never do) is crazy.  And there is nothing like it in the world.  My son and I are usually entranced- but even the husband gets into it, and almost nothing does that.

03 20 14 034So what’s new this year?  Plenty.  (Don’t forget to get there early- you get go into the performance area and meet some of the stars and acts before the show starts if you plan ahead and don’t lollygag.  (Yeah, I said lollygag.  Enjoy.)

03 20 14 060The Greatest Show on Earth is coming to town! Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ new show, LEGENDS, will be in the New York & New Jersey area for a five-week run, starting February 20th. The brand new show features legendary ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson, who has been with Ringling Bros. since his debut as the first African-American ringmaster in the company’s history in 1998.

The Big Apple Circus

Looking for something fun to do with the kids?  The Big Apple Circus is back, and better then ever.  This year brings “Luminocity”, which transports the acts in the circus’ single ring the New York City’s Times Square.   My husband, my son, and I all loved the acts in the circus, and we all had a great time.  Bonus for families you don’t have to pay to park, the souvenirs are (really, I swear) reasonably priced, and there is food available on site.

The Big Apple Circus also really cares about kids- they created an organization called “Clown Care”.  Performers head out to heal kids with the power of love and laughter, and bring joy into the lives of kids that can’t get to the circus themselves.

“Clown Care, the signature community outreach program of the Big Apple Circus, brings the joy of classical circus to hospitalized children at 16 leading pediatric facilities across the United States. Circus Co-Founder Michael Christensen created the program in 1986 based on his desire to provide a unique service to youngsters undergoing treatment in pediatric facilities. In partnership with a participating hospital’s chief medical and administrative staff, members of the Clown Care team conduct ‘clown rounds,’ their own version of medical rounds, where the healing power of humor is always the prescription.”
