Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals #HelpKidsLiveBetter

As a parent there is nothing scarier then the thought of your child seriously sick or hurt.  This can be a horrible maddening experience where you are not only helpless in the face of a big problem but also without answers and especially without reasons.  But for these serious times it is good to know Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are out there and willing to give you the help you need to get your child back in good shape.

The little guy at one point was very ill.  He had a whole bunch of stomach issues to say the least.  And as we adults know these are not ‘fun’ experiences and we know exactly what is going on and that they have to happen.  As a little one, all he knew was something hurt.  So we met with doctors, many of them.  From dietitians to gastroenterologists and even GI surgeons, all had very little to tell us. They all gave us different reasons and things to try, and none seemed to work.  Eventually we did find out what was wrong, part of the reason was that his intestine and bowels were too big for his size/age.  This part, he will eventually “grow into”.  Other issues still had to be worked out, and he is what I lovingly refer to as “high maintenance”.  It’s an ongoing situation.  Even now, we have a therapeutic way of keeping this issue in control as long as he takes a certain combination of probiotics and vitamins every single day, as well as some other medications and keeps his water and fiber intake high.  If even one day is missed, it is problematic and makes for some horribly painful daily activities.

If this issue wasn’t found and dealt with in a proper matter by competent caring doctors, we would still be worrying day and night about it, and the poor little guy would still be having at least daily stomach pain and probably worse.  If you want to help out kids in need, please consider donating to Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals.

Sick days with Pfizer Pediatric

Disclosure- I was provided with samples by Pfizer Pediatric Platform for this  review and social shares in order to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own and honest.

Sick days happen- when your kids go to school or day care or the park or anywhere that involves contact with other small humans, and germs spread.  This leads to stronger immune systems down the line, but short term it leads to the sniffles, colds, congestion, and fevers.  To help alleviate these issues, it always best to be well prepared with a medicine cabinet of options like Infant and Children’s Advil®, Children’s Robitussin®, and Children’s Dimetapp®.  “Children’s Advil® helps with fever and pain, but is meant for little ones between 2 years and 11 yearsChildren’s Robitussin® assists with controlling coughs and can last for up to 6 hours.  Children’s Dimetapp® helps with cold and cough symptoms and is the number one doctor recommended brand.

Some other tips for little ones who are sick include:

  1.  Keep them comfy.  Blankets, plush toys, low light, anything to give them the feeling of warmth and comfort to help them sleep through it, and wake up better.
  2. Keep close.  Since your little one is not 100% they may not be as vocal as usual and you might need to keep an eye on them for subtle ques as so what they need.  Examples are, extra coughing, they need more water, not soda or juice, water.  Extra moans and groans maybe its time for more medicine.  Extra boogers, more tissues and such.
  3. Quiet and chill is the name of the game.  Keep visitors to a  minimum and contact with other little ones to a minimum as well.  Just because your little one is sick doesn’t mean they all should be.

20160321_175140

With these tips and you yourself being a calm collected parent, you can withstand ALMOST any cold or flu that rears its ugly head. If you feel like it is too much for you, then there is always the pediatrician you can call. If you think your child is really sick, or if it lasts a while, do not hesitate to contact your regular pediatrician.  That is the reason why you have them, on speed dial isn’t it?

Pfizer Pediatric wants to help you get prepared for the fevers, coughs, and colds coming your way this season, and Target has all of the Pfizer Pediatric products you need to fight against the “ick’s” and “ew’s” that bring your kids down.  Each of these products are available at Target.com and your local Target stores as well.

I was provided with the following in order to share my opinions with you-

They really came in handy when my little one was dealing with the cold and flu season.  It’s always good to have them in the house so you are ready when your kids fall ill- no one needs a sick kid and no medicine in sight.  Head to your local Target and pick up some for your medicine cabinet today!

5 Steps to Good Eye Health

pic8

We often take our eyes for granted. We stare at our phone, computer and TV screens for hours on end. We don’t get enough sleep. It’s easy to forget that our eyes need a lot of care too. Follow our quick guide to ensure your eyes are in tip top condition.

  1. Our eyes need regular check-ups. The time between appointments will vary. This is likely to depend on age, overall health and any pre-existing conditions. It is important that you visit your optometrist regularly and report any concerns you have straight away. Don’t wait until your next appointment to do this.Your optometrist will check your eyes for any signs of illness. He or she will also test to see whether you need glasses or contact lenses or if your prescription has changed.

If you wear contact lenses, make sure you follow your optometrist’s advice. Always use a reputable contact lens supplier like Lens Direct.

  1. Maintaining overall good health will be beneficial to your whole body as well as your eyes. This includes eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. Food containing omega-3 fatty acids may help protect against macular degeneration and cataracts. This includes salmon, tuna and other oily fish. Other foods linked to good eye health are eggs, nuts, beans, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables.

Drinking enough water each day is also vital to our health and wellbeing. Make sure you keep your body hydrated by consuming the required quantity of fluids. Water is vital for producing tears and ensuring the eyes remain moist.

Lack of sleep leads to numerous health issues, many of which are serious. We need seven to nine hours of sleep each night for our body to replenish and restore itself. Tiredness also affects our eye health leading to many problems including eye spasms and dry eyes. If we’re sleep-deprived, our eyes look puffy and over-tired.

  1. Smoking is bad for your health. Period. The damaging effects are widely publicized. Smoking has an adverse affect on so many areas, including our eyes. I could also decrease your lifespan. So our advice is to quit. Right now.
  1. Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses. Make sure you purchase a pair that offers 99% to 100% protection against UVA and UVB rays. Too much exposure to harmful rays can make you more prone to conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
  1. If you work at a computer every day, make sure you look away from the screen. Rest your eyes by looking away every twenty minutes. Also, make sure you take regular breaks by getting up out of your chair and walking around.

Make sure that your screen is positioned away from any glare. If necessary, request that your desk is moved and opt for an anti-glare screen. Ensure your glasses or contact lenses are suitable for your job.
Much of this is common sense. Many of these tips are part of living a health-conscious life. If you eat healthily, exercise, get enough sleep and visit your eye doctor regularly you’re already part way there.

New Healthy Foods and Fitness Products

If you are looking for new, healthy foods to incorporate into family meals, we have a few new items you might want to try out.

20160223_095051
First- how much tofu do you eat? If you are like most Americans, the answer is “not much”. If you are like my husband, you think tofu is for “hippies”, or at best, vegetarians. You know- hippies? (Like his wife, by the way- calm down, hippies.) You can do a lot with tofu, it’s very versatile and takes on the flavor of nearly anything.  House Foods makes a large variety of tofu items, including several kinds of noodles. There are a ton of recipes as well on their website, for those less then familiar with cooking this traditional Asian food.   You can choose all sorts of world cuisines from (of course) Asian to Italian to American and more, as well as fun, kid friendly choices.  Another way you might entice your kids to try this new food is by showing them that the packages have Kung Fu Panda on them- they can eat like Po!  You and your children can prepare the food together, which will make them more likely to give tofu a try.  Inexpensive, kosher, gluten free, non GMO- there are a ton of reasons to try House Foods Tofu the next time you head to the grocery store.  Prices vary per item.

Another plant-based option is Vega Protein and Greens, a protein powder you can use as a breakfast shake or any snack throughout the day. The whole food ingredient proteins include hemp, peas, and sprouted whole grain brown rice. It also contains papaya enzymes which help you break down the foods you eat.  In every scoop (thus every shake) you will get two servings of  greens from kale, spinach, broccoli, and alfalfa.  It comes in a variety of flavors, from the basic chocolate and vanilla, to berry, coconut almond, mocha, and more.  The Protein & Greens is available in Vanilla, Chocolate, Berry, Tropical and Natural. The flavor and texture isn’t what you think it might be- it’s not like other “green” drinks I’ve tried, the flavor is not “biting” like many of them can be- but it’s not a milkshake, either. There are also snack bars available.   Head to https://myvega.com/ to find out more and to place an order- prices vary.

For something perhaps more familiar to your palate, yet still something new, try Noosa Yoghurt.   The tastes and flavor combinations, along with the fact that it is made in small batches on a small family farm, make this unlike any other yogurt on the market today.  Made with all natural whole milk, fresh fruit purees, and honey, one bite will keep you coming back for more.  It’s also  all natural, gluten-free, and probiotic, so it’s good for the whole family.  It comes in a variety of sizes- some just perfect for lunchboxes in cases of four, some in larger, single containers. With brand new flavors like Key Lime, Salted Caramel (my favorite), Blood Orange, and Blackberry Serrano joining favorites like traditional Vanilla and Blueberry as well as seasonal favorites, you are sure to find something you love.  Find a store that sells Noosa near you at http://www.noosayoghurt.com/

Before you turn in, you want to get in a good workout.  This time of year, with temperatures still low in much of the country, many of us are looking for something to break up our routine.  Have you tried the recent trend of Hula Hooping?  I know- sounds strange.  It’s more fun then you might think, though (even if you feel a little silly at first).  Hey, with every other adult carrying around a coloring book, why not?  Nostalgia is in, run with it.  Or hoop with it, as it were. The Cardio Core & More Fitness Hoop by Empower is a  three-pound, weighted, multicolored hula hoop.  It targets your core to burn calories and build muscle while you are having fun hooping away.  You can grab your new hoop and DVD set for about $33 on Amazon, also available at stores like Target.  The same brand carries a line of women’s workout accessories (headbands, gloves, etc) featuring retro-reflective ink technology that glows in the dark but looks completely normal during the daylight, making this some pretty cool fitness safety gear.

The Benefits of Quitting Smoking and the E-Cigarette

It’s been well documented for many years now that smoking causes a number of terrible diseases in both smokers and those who suffer from second hand smoke, and while many people try each year to kick the habit, it is no easy feat. Luckily, there have been some serious medical and technological developments in the way smokers can fight their urges, the most recent being the creation of the electronic cigarette. So why is now the best time for you to quit smoking? Well, here are just a few important reasons.

Your Health

The ultimate thing you’re saving when you quit smoking is your health, and while some might believe the positive effects will not be seen until far in the future, they actually begin a mere 20 minutes after you finish your final cigarette. 20 minutes after you stop smoking your pulse, blood pressure, and temperature in your hands and feet return to normal, and a mere 12 hours later your blood-oxygen level and your carbon monoxide levels have also returned to normal. The long-term positive effects are by far the most important ones, however, as 5-15 years down the line your risk of stroke has returned to that of a non-smoker, and 15 years later your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as that of a person who has never smoked.

The Health of Those Around You

While you might be okay accepting the consequences of your own actions, the negative impact that smoking has on those around you should be a major motivator to quit. Second hand smoke, or passive smoking, has been shown to increase a person’s chance of lung cancer by a quarter, meaning that family and friends who inhale your second hand smoke are 25% more likely to end-up with lung cancer.

Lose the Smoker’s Smell and Look

For non-smokers it is never hard to spot a smoker, as the scent of tobacco is always present in their hair or clothes, and their teeth and fingers tend to have a jaundiced look to them. Because smokers live with this smell and the slightly yellowish look, they tend not to notice it, but after quitting you’ll quickly find that others will look at you in a new light.

Banana Boat® Summer

When ever you have a Summer activity proper sun screen in necessary. This is not only the healthy way to have Summer fun but also saves your family and yourself with unwanted pain, itching and peeling. And those are some of the short term effects. We all know what is possible without proper sun screen application, so use it.

20150606_105653

Not only are trips to the beach or the pool places where Banana Boat ® is a must, but also when going to places like the park, zoo, carnival, really any place with a chance to be outside. My suggestion would be get a small bottle of Banana Boat® Sport Performance® Lotion Sunscreen with PowerStay Technology™. Did you know proper sun screening should be 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to you and your kids’ entire bodies 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

20150606_105707

Another Summer activity that should not be ignored when reaching to the sun screen is gardening in the yard. Just because it is overcast does not mean the sun is not emitting its harmful rays. Banana Boat® sun care products are tested in seven conditions–sun, pool water, ocean water, wind, sweat, sand and extreme heat–to provide safe and effective broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection for the entire family.

20150618_111659

So whatever your Summer activity is keep it safe and protected and of course have a great time with your family and friends. I’ll be here hoping you get no rain during your festivities.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Banana Boat® . The opinions and text are all mine.

Canine Flu is Spreading — now in 13 States

Canine Flu is now in Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin and Texas

What You Can Do to Keep Your Pet Safe and Healthy

Flu season may be winding down for humans, but there have been thousands of reported cases of canine influenza in the last several months. To help dog owners better understand the virus, here are some key facts from the American Veterinary Medical Association:

What is canine influenza?

Canine influenza (CI), or dog flu, is a highly contagious infection caused by an influenza A subtype H3N8 virus first discovered in 2004.

What are common symptoms of the infection in dogs?

In the mild form, the most common sign is a cough that persists for 2-3 weeks. However, some dogs can develop signs of severe pneumonia, such as a high-grade fever (104°F-106°F) and faster breathing. Other signs in infected dogs include nasal and/or ocular discharge, sneezing, fatigue, and refusing food.

Is every dog at risk of infection?

All dogs, regardless of breed or age, are susceptible to infection.

How does it spread?

Canine influenza is spread from dog to dog through the air, contaminated objects (kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes), and people ineracting with infected and uninfected dogs. On surfaces, the virus is alive and can infect dogs for up to 48 hours, on clothing for 24 hours, and on hands for 12 hours.

Can veterinarians test for canine influenza?

The most reliable and sensitive method for confirmation is serologic testing. Antibodies to canine influenza virus can appear in blood as early as 7 days after symptoms begin, and the virus may be identified in nasal or pharyngeal swabs during the first 4 days of illness.

Any treatment options?

In May 2009, the USDA approved the first influenza vaccine for dogs. Trials have shown that it can significantly reduce the duration of illness, including the incidence and severity of damage to the lungs. Dog owners should consult with their vet to determine whether the vaccine is appropriate for their dog.

Can canine influenza infect people?

There is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted from dogs to humans.

What can dog owners do to help protect their pet?

Some pet owners are steering away from dog parks and other areas where other infected dogs might gather.
