Planning For Travel Emergencies

It’s been said that if you fail to plan, you have planned to fail. Traveling with kids requires a lot of preparation. You have to get clothing, grooming products, and comfort items for the whole household, all of which goes on top of determining an itinerary, finding a good deal on hotels, and planning a route.

In the middle of all that, there is an endless list of things that can go wrong, no matter how well you’ve prepared in other areas. Make sure you give careful consideration to as many potential disasters as you can, without burdening yourself with excess baggage–mentally or physically.

A Wrecked Car…

Nobody wants to think about this possibility, but according to one legal practice with extensive auto accident experience, there are 6.2 million automobile crashes reported to police every year. If you’ve never been involved in one yourself, you may feel like it won’t happen to you. But it might, and if it happens when you’re on vacation, it can be incredibly disruptive if you aren’t prepared–even if no one is hurt.

What do you do when you’re hundreds of miles from home on your Idaho vacation and your vehicle has been so heavily damaged that it can’t be driven? Will you have the financial resources to secure another means of travel? It’s important to discuss these issues with your insurance agent before you travel and to consider automobile club coverage that can help get you back on the road.

…Or Wrecked Plans

When most people think of vacation problems, they think of the 1980’s movie National Lampoon’s Vacation, in which a cross-country trip from Chicago to L.A. turns into disaster when the destination theme park is closed for repairs.

It’s unlikely to happen to you, but it’s certainly worthwhile to review your planned venues for fun and togetherness in order to make sure everything you expect will be available. This is especially important with natural attractions like Yellowstone National Park, which has experienced partial closures over the years due to active forest fires.

Construction, renovation, weather issues, and safety concerns can all shutter famous attractions. Check news outlets and the sites’ web presence before assuming you’ll be able to walk or drive right in.

Illness Outbreaks

With the hectic schedule, new foods, and exposure to lots of people, it’s very easy to get sick while traveling. Local allergens can attack you, leaving you sneezing and coughing. A stomach virus or food poisoning could hit the whole family.

Check things out before you travel. Make sure you know where the nearest emergency room is for each city where you’ll spend the night, and if you’re finding hotels day by day, make sure you can use hospital-finding features on your phone.

But you should also be prepared to treat illnesses without professional help. Bring over-the-counter allergy medications, fever reducers, and upset-stomach products along–even if no one is sick when you leave home. And stock up on kids’ electrolyte solutions and gentle foods like crackers so that you can avoid a midnight trip to the store in a strange town.

There is a spectrum of travel styles that ranges from the minute-by-minute planner whose day is ruined if they miss one turn, to the free-and-easy sojourner who just lets the chips fall where they may. Somewhere in the happy medium is the best place to be, but one thing that can’t be left to chance or whims is your preparation for potential travel problems. Make plans for how to deal with the most likely problems so that they don’t ruin your treasured family time.

South England Interactive Travel Map

map

When going on a  trip, one of the most important ways to prepare for it is with research.  Research is a whole lot easier with the right tools and a wealth of information pertinent to your trip.  One great tool which I was recently introduced to is the South England Interactive Travel Map.  When visiting the UK, it can be difficult to figure out what places to visit, what things to do, and where to find them. This map helps do just that in one place, broken down by area and destinations.

This map brings various locations in Southern England to your fingertips, and is broken down into four categories: directions, activities, food and drinks, and local attractions.  Each category is broken down into bite size nuggets of information with just enough to whet your appetite to visit locations for yourself.  Each destination also has a picture included with the short description, to give you an interesting sneak peak. Some of the locations included are: Berkshire,Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Sussex, Devon, and Cornwall.  What I really like about the site is the local attractions section. This area includes not only historical and cultural locations like castles and cathedrals (tours Americans typically love, being as we don’t have much in the way of those here in the USA) but also family friendly fun locations like adventure parks and beaches.

I also like the food and drinks section, which includes local dishes available from both small family owned restaurants and pubs as well as upscale restaurants.  (Always try local favorites and whatever the area is famous for!) The combination gives visitors a great overall taste of the area.  This is the perfect tool for planning your next trip to England.  It doesn’t matter if you are planning a short visit like a long  weekend or a more in depth trip, the interactive map of Southern England is a valuable tool when planning and doing research and will help you find all the local hot spots.

Preparing Children for Upcoming Airplane Travel

travel with kids

Planning a family trip can seem overwhelming enough to most parents, but planning on surviving the trip with children may seem impossible. With proper preparation, any parent can survive taking a trip on a plane with their children, no matter how old they are. It’s helpful to prepare yourself and your children ahead of time for the upcoming trip and always plan for the worst-case scenarios just in case.

Prioritize Safety

Safety needs to be your number one priority at the airport and on the plane. Airports are busy places and when parents are busy worrying about their luggage and boarding on time, children need to remain close by the entire time. As any parent knows, children can wander away rather quickly, so remain vigilant in keeping your children under control by giving them something to do or allowing them to help out. On the plane, try to keep children out of aisle seats. Ear pressure and pain are common in children on planes, so ensure you purchase appropriate ear protection. You can get padded child-size noise-attenuating earphones from this online pilot store prior to your trip.

Get Them Excited About The Destination

Children love to have something to look forward to, so spend some time getting them excited about where you are taking a trip to. Whether it’s a trip to Disneyland or a family vacation to explore a new place and learn about a culture like Mexico, tell your children about all the cool adventures in store for them. If you are going somewhere where the culture is very different than what your children are used to, teach them about it so they know what to expect. You can help them prepare by watching travel videos and reading books about your destination.

Leave Early and Plan Accordingly

Make sure you arrive at the airport super early, because you never know what will happen that could potentially set you back and make you late. Don’t rush to be the first ones on the airplane. It’s good to wait until the crowd has already gotten on the plane. Try to plan your trip on the least traveled days like Tuesday through Thursday. Late afternoon and evening flights might be hard for young children to handle, so try to plan morning or early afternoon trips if possible.

Plan Activities to Keep Them Entertained

One of the most important things you can do to survive a plane trip with children is to find ways to keep them entertained. Pack a fun bag for them filled with things they’ll enjoy for the duration of the trip. Make sure to learn the rules for what you can and cannot carry on the plane first before packing a bag. Some items you can pack include:

·  Books

·  Coloring books

·  Drinks and snacks

·  Stickers

·  Magna-doodle

·  Portable DVD player

·  Music player with headphones

·  Handheld video games

·  Small stuffed animals

·  Cards

Older children will be able to tell you what they want to bring, but you can encourage them to bring items like books, brain teaser games, and crossword puzzles. Get the little ones involved by letting them help pack their carry-on bags.

Airplane rides can be a fun and exciting experience for adults and children. With careful planning and preparing your children ahead of time, your trip can end up going smoothly. Get your children involved as much as possible and have them excited about the destination. Keep reminding them of all the fun they’re going to have once you arrive so they have something to look forward to.

The Quintessential Idaho Road Trip

20140805_125144

Idaho is an ideal place for a road trip. It’s chock full of scenery, attractions, great eateries, and fantastic places to stay. Virtually every route you take in Idaho has benefits, so to help you get started, here are some of the very best places to take in during your Idaho road trip.

Boise

Boise is a great place to be if you have a family. There are many museums in the heart of the city including a fabulous art museum. There’s also Zoo Boise and the Idaho Botanical Gardens, both of which make a good half-day’s fun. If your crew is more historically inclined, you could try the Old Idaho Penitentiary. There are self-guided tours, and some visitors have reported seeing ghosts!

No trip to Boise would be complete without taking in some of the city’s gorgeous natural wonders. There are plenty of riverside trails for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, and it truly takes you some of the best places Boise has to offer. There’s also the World Center for Birds of Prey, which is a bit off of the beaten path, but your kids will learn a lot about various birds of prey and the staff is fantastic.

Hell’s Canyon National Recreation Area

Hell’s Canyon is widely known for being the deepest river gorge in North America. If your family likes adventure, this is the perfect spot to travel to. There’s so much to do here: hiking, biking, camping, fishing, winter sports. Make sure to schedule a float trip if your kids are old enough as it’s a great way to truly experience the canyon.

Lake Coeur d’Alene

This well-known lake spot truly lives up to the hype. There really is something for everyone here. Top-notch fishing charters abound, and there are plenty of well-kept, reasonably-priced campgrounds at which to cook your fish at the end of the day. Water sports abound; you can rent boats, canoes, and jet skis or leave it to the professionals and take a chartered boat tour. Lake cruises are also a popular choice, and you can even take a dinner cruise if you’re inclined to enjoy a meal. Coeur d’Alene also hosts many wine tastings for the adults on the trip. You will have no trouble finding cuisine to fit your taste and budget. Ask a local for the best place to eat.

Shoshone Falls

Although Idaho is filled with breathtaking waterfalls, Shoshone Falls is one of the best in terms of both beauty and accessibility. Located along the Snake River, it plunges 212 feet. It’s a perfect choice for a relaxing picnic while the rush of the falls relaxes you. There are plenty of facilities to keep your family comfortable including hiking trails, a swimming area, an overlook, playgrounds, and restroom facilities.

Yellowstone National Park

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard about many of the awesome sights and activities that Yellowstone has to offer. There are rivers, mountains, lakes, streams, forests, geothermal features and geysers, and of course, the wildlife. One of the best ways to see Yellowstone is to go in the spring or fall. You’ll avoid the maddening crowds and you’ll be better able to take in everything that the park has to offer.

Whatever your road tripping desires, Idaho has something for you and your family. Happy travels!

The Condado Plaza Hilton in Puerto Rico

Visiting the capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan, is a must.  There are many things to see and it has many things to offer any tourist. In the heart of it all is the Condado strip. It is a short walk to beaches, shopping and nightlife or to the colonial charms of Old San Juan. It is also where the Condado Plaza Hilton is located.

P1040101

Condado Plaza Hilton has the distinct privilege of being the only hotel to overlook the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil Candado Lagoon. Constructed in 1963, Condado Plaza Hilton is a landmark hotel that features 571 Leo-Daly designed deluxe guest rooms and suites. Each room has a sleek contemporary design and many feature private balconies and gorgeous water views.

While visiting Condado Plaza Hilton, there is dining for every taste and preference. With 8 restaurants, bars and lounges (including an award winning fine dining restaurant, Pikayo) you will want to try them all, and I can personally tell you the food is fantastic.

Besides the amazing food choices, there is plenty to do while visiting the resort. Enjoy the protected cove-like beach, perfect for kayacking in the Condado Lagoon, or enjoy snorkeling at the underwater artificial, indigenous-themed reef trail. There are plenty of watersports available in the  Condado Lagoon. Besides kayaks and snorkeling, there are also stand up paddle boards, boats and floats available- some in the lagoon, some in the cove. With a reservation, you can get lessons for wind surfing and kayaking.

If you are looking for water fun but do not want to be in the ocean, swim in one of the 4 outdoor pools.  These include an activity pool with a waterslide and swim-up bar, a lap/lounge pool overlooking the Condado Lagoon, a toddler’s pool, and the only saltwater pool in Puerto Rico. The pools are beautiful and wonderfully clean, you will want to stay in them all day.  There is even a rooftop pool, which is pretty neat.

20151213_094938One of the pools also has a really fun castle themed waterslide, that kids and adults can both use.  My son really loved it.  There is a swim up bar as well, where you can get adult or “virgin” drinks to cool off in the hot sun should you want to.

If you are looking for something a little different to do with the kids, look into the ScoutAbout children’s activity program. Kids love scavenger hunts, and this will take their vacation to a whole new level of adventure. Throughout the hotel, little scavengers can find hidden Points of Discovery. Kids read the map and explore different areas, then they receive a color-coded ScoutAbout Band. If they collect them all, the kids can join the Wall of Fame.

Traveling To India With The Kids: 6 Useful Tips

09 10 09 213

India is a beautiful and dazzling country, brimming with culture and tradition. It makes for an interesting and educational trip. Children will love it. There’s so much to do and see. To make the most of your vacation, follow our family-friendly tips.

  1. Before You Go

Before you leave, plan your journey carefully. Find areas that are family-friendly. Read as many India travel tips as you can, and check out online reviews.

Research travel destinations and put together a rough itinerary. Leave some space to be flexible. You’ll find you encounter lots of new things when you arrive. It’s worth leaving some free time to be spontaneous.

Budget accommodation generally means tiny rooms with pull out cots. Check with the hotel before traveling. Online reviews are invaluable.

  1. Prepare For the Climate

Check out the weather before you travel and ensure that you have adequate clothing. High season is between December and March. During those months the days are warm and the nights are cool. April and June are the hottest months. The mountains are cooler at these times but can be crowded.

  1. General Precautions

Always check out the US Dept. of State Alerts and Warnings before traveling abroad.

Pickpocketing can be an issue in some regions. Take precautions and keep valuables secure. Padlock your luggage for extra security.

Take hand sanitizer and use it when you can.

Ensure you undergo any relevant vaccinations before you travel. Malaria is a risk in India, so do take precautions. Use repellent and cover up in the evenings. Sleep under a mosquito net where possible.

Take a first-aid kit with basic supplies. It should include tablets for diarrhea, general painkillers, and antihistamines.

If you feel dehydrated, coconut water is delicious and will rehydrate you.

  1. Getting Around

If you’re traveling through India, kids will love the tuk-tuks for short journeys. For longer journeys, the bus can be challenging for young children. Trips tend to be long, and there are few rest stops. Train journeys are easier, but you should expect delays.

  1. Eating

Depending on your destination, eating may not be as tricky as you think. Many destinations offer kids’ favorites like McDonald’s, pizza, and toasted sandwiches. Encourage kids to try some of the local cuisines. There are lots of tame versions available. For sensitive palates stick to veggie options and boiled rice. Stock up on fresh fruit as snacks for journeys.

  1. Activities

There is no end to the activities in India. The International Kite Festival takes place in January and is stunning. Festivals take place in most regions and are certainly worth a visit. For adventure activities, check safety and credentials with organizers.

For many children, India is different to anything they have ever experienced. It is a thriving and vibrant country. Children will be enthralled by the bustle, color, and culture. With a little research and planning, you can choose the best destinations and make the most of your vacation. It will be a holiday that you and your family will never forget.
