Hey all- Sorry- I forgot to hit the “post” button- this was sitting in my box, LOL!

We just saw the Cars 2 screening, from Disney.  While I loved the movie, and liked it more, in fact, then Cars (the original)- I found it a bit violent for the kids.  It was like “James Bond” meets cartoon kid’s movie.  The problem being- while it was more entertaining for the adult in me- the mommy in me was less then then thrilled with the violent aspects.  Car torture?  Killing Cars?  LOTS of explosions, ganging up on cars to beat them up or worse, electrocuting cars, blowing them up- this was aimed at small kids, right?  NOT thrilled.  A lot of people think there should have been more Lightning McQueen.  I don’t.  I liked the Mater story line- Lightning had his movie already.  I just thought that it was a bit much for the young kids.  You know- the ones who the movie is aimed at.  No thank you.  I will let Little watch the old Cars movie any time- but I won’t let him watch this one again.  If we had a second car, I would have taken him home during this one.  I was really quite annoyed that killing and torture was deemed to be a G movie.  The cars in the movie are supposed to be living things- very much like people, with thoughts, feelings, etc.  Not hunks of metal like what we drive around in.  So think of it this way- would you want your kids to see a movie where PEOPLE were tortured and killed, chased down, electrocuted?  Not me.  The cars are supposed to be representative of people- the cars are the society.  So to show all that to children is very uncouth in my book.  Thanks anyway.
My son loves the toys, he loves the play sets, he loves all things to do with Cars- and now Cars 2.  But no way in the world will I let him see that movie again, and that will show me to trust a movie rating.  I will make sure I see all movies before he does, from now on.  Good grief!
He can certainly play with the toys, he loves them!  And again- Cars 1 was a great, cute movie about redemption and treating others well, not being mean, showing respect, helping out, etc.  I would think before going to see this one.  Sorry ya’ll.

Disclosure- we got to see this movie for free in order to review it.  These are my opinions, yours may differ.

  1. I often wonder if Disney is purposely trying to go more violent to try to keep kids interested. Our society is really programming children to like that garbage. Anyways, hope they try to clean things up a bit. Thanks for your always-honest reviews! 🙂

  2. I saw it too and noticed the same things, and said so in my review (although I didn’t go into as much detail and now I wish I HAD)… but the response from some parents was “Oh it’s not that bad,” or “it goes over their head anyway” – definitely makes you wonder. I think it is NOT right b/c you’re right, the cars are supposed to be people.
That first scene where the burning car flies off the oil derrick and drowns was REALLY unsettling for me.
Thanks for saying so and providing the details. I am glad you did and maybe I need to revise my post to show people how MUCH violence there really was instead of just commenting that it was there. DEFINITELY should not have been a “G” movie!!!
although I did appreciate that there was LESS potty humor in this sequel (but still some, which I didn’t like either).

  3. Always appreciate a heads up before taking the grand kids to see a movie.

  4. I appreciate the candid review! I still want to see the film myself but I appreciate hearing that the content may not be appropriate for every child and every family, despite the rating!

  5. It’s refreshing to hear “the other side” of Cars2. So far all I’ve read is praise. Thanks for the heads up.

  6. We went to see Cars2 on opening day and it was fabulous. I am glad you noticed all the well written action as I did.

  7. Thanks for the heads up. This is/was one summer flick we were anxious to see. I may have to take the older boys to check out first before I let the younger one & the little old lady see it.

  8. Wow it does seem odd that a movie intended for little kids would contain so much violence. Thanks for letting us know!

  9. Wow! I haven’t seen it, but am shocked that the storyline involves so much violence. I loved the original and while my nieces, nephews and god kids didn’t get some of the jokes, they also enjoyed it. They’ve been begging me to go since it was released, but after this post I think I’ll leave the younger ones at home. You’d think with the rise of bullying in schools, that Disney would want to communicate a message that doesn’t involve violence. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I was very surprised about the violence. It’s one thing to have some race car crashes, but they were plotting to kill and SAYING they were going to kill others. I liked seeing more Mater but yeah… for the older kids.

  11. i thought this also and do not know why so many other moms do not say the same and it makes me wonder about them
