One of the things that has always amazed me about the holidays and decorations and such are the amount of home-made but bought in the store crafts you can buy. These items are often sold at astronomical prices and look used already, but don’t have the character and feel of stuff you already own and are made by hand. There is no thumb print in the paint, or extra glue blob on the glitter, give it that unique sparkle when the light hits it just right. In their place there is uniform, pseudo-simple decorations made by people you never will know and they didn’t even have the decency to sign the back of it!

dec 16 136Take the holidays back. Have your kids help with decorating. Let them fill a wreath with joy love. Even a few ornaments or sun catches could add a little extra personality to your home. Sure the snowman has one black boot and one blue one but you know who painted those boots, your little one. Know whose name is written on the back with the last letter backwards? Not inspector 42, but the little girl/guy with blue paint in their hair.

dec 16 364We do have a few tips for you on your crafting adventure.

1) Get extra supplies, you always need to have a spare. Paint brush, glue, glitter, get more than you need. Trust me its better this way. EKSuccess is a great brand to look for.

2) Start small. Don’t start with the bird house from scratch if you have a little kid or are a newbie- work your way up to that and other and big projects. First do simple drawings for greeting cards or sew a decoration.

3) Be prepared for a mess. Always cover everything in a layer or two of newspaper before starting, then get changed into clothes both you don’t mind getting ruined and you don’t mind your little one ruining. Yes some clothes have cool patterns on them after painting, but most just look like paint clothes.

4) Last but not least have fun. Put on music, give yourselves sometime and laugh, talk, and enjoy the small moment with your kids which will be the ones they remember forever.
