“Are we nearly there yet?”

Those dreaded words, if you’ve ever gone for a drive that lasts longer than 10
minutes you can be sure that you will hear some variation of this universal
complaint. So, for those unavoidable, longer road trips what can we do to keep
the kids happy?

Water Intake AND Outtake
Do you fancy cleaning milk/juice/other off your car interior? No, we didn’t think
so! Try to take water on a long journey to keep everyone hydrated but make your
life a little easier.
All that water is going to result in numerous rest stop trips. In case you can’t
get to a rest stop in time, make sure you have a potty for younger children and
emergency bottles are perfect for boys in times of need!

Snack Time
If you don’t fancy cleaning milk up then I doubt you’ll be a fan of messy foods
or crumbs. If you need to take snacks on a road trip try fruit sections – lollipops
are great for keeping the little angels quiet for a while, but watch those sticky
fingers!

Think in Time Slots
Try to break your journey up into time slots and plan something different for
each slot. This will give the illusion of time going faster and stop any ‘I’m bored’
chants.

Sleep Schedule
If you have young children a clever road trip trick is to plan your journey around
their sleep schedule. You can either travel just after lunch and let the kids grab
a few z’s or pop your pajama-clad sleeping beauties straight into the car after
bedtime.

Pit Stops
Thankfully, during a road trip you can schedule in breaks. If you are travelling
with kids you’ll soon find that getting them to sit still for long periods of time
is pretty difficult. Try to stop every 2-3 hours to let them stretch their legs; this
will work even better if you plan ahead so you know where you will be stopping.
Make the trip a little more interesting by stopping at fun places or roadside
attractions.

Entertainment
Entertainment is possibly the most important factor to consider when travelling
with children. In-car DVD players, or portable versions are a super easy way of
keeping the kids entertaining during your journey. When travelling with babies,
use in-car toys that attach to the seats whereas toddlers will love sticker books
(expect to find at least one sticker where it shouldn’t be) and Magna Doodle
drawing boards. Older children will enjoy audio books or music these days

almost every game comes in a travel version.
