It seems that Cannabidiol (CBD) has gained immense popularity lately. Everywhere you turn, there’s a new CBD product on the shelf. With so many options, it’s important to understand the basics. What is CBD? Is it legal where you live? What are the benefits? Keep reading to learn more!

What is CBD?

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis. CBD is one of over 80 cannabinoids that can be extracted from the hemp plant. Two of the most well-known compounds of the Cannabis plant are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). It is important to note that CBD is often associated with marijuana, but it is actually much different. Although marijuana and hemp are close relatives, they have one major difference.

THC and CBD act on different receptors in your brain and your body. THC is well known for it’s “high” you experience while using, but CBD is non-psychoactive — meaning you will not feel a “high” or any feelings of intoxication when using CBD.

Both CBD and THC have attributes that can aid in therapeutic effects. CBD however, tends to be wildly popular because it is therapeutically potent as well as non-intoxicating, making it easy to consume and more appealing to those who are beginning to dabble in the world of CBD. Most commonly, CBD is used either topically or through ingestion (though, they can be used in conjunction with one another). Typically, those that reach for topical products are searching for quick relief in their joints, muscles, or skin hydration. While users that chose to ingest CBD are looking for ways to alleviate feelings of anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain.

For years, CBD has had to fight the stigma in relation to marijuana. Now, people are beginning to see the benefits and healing nature, and demand for research has continued to grow. The health and science communities have continued to lead the way in research and awareness, encouraging others to consider CBD as a safe and natural alternative to modern medicine.

Is CBD Legal?

Up until recently, this topic was quite controversial. Luckily, the passing of the 2014 Farm Bill helped to define the legality of CBD more than ever before. The passing of the bill enabled state governments the legal right to grow and research industrial hemp under state-regulated pilot programs. Additionally, hemp and hemp-derived products with less than .3% THC were officially classified separately from marijuana.

Then, the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the growth, production, consumption, and sale of hemp-based products throughout all 50 states. This guaranteed the legality of CBD that is extracted from industrial hemp and contains less than .3% THC, per Congress’ decision. Keep in mind, this passing did not legalize CBD products that are derived from marijuana. The legalities of those products vary from state to state.

The federal legalization of hemp-derived products with less than 0.3% THC enabled the legality of traveling with Cannabidiol oil. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), “Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by the FDA.”

What are the Benefits of CBD?

Many people are seeking alternatives to modern medicinal products, and are being led to CBD. CBD has been praised for it’s believed ability to relieve ailments that would normally require traditional pharmaceutical products. By using CBD in its place, you can skip out on the harsh side effects and tap into “medicine” that is much more in sync with your body’s natural processes.

Research continues on as scientists seek to find more definitive examples of how CBD can potentially treat a wide range of issues, which includes (but, is not limited to):

  • Autoimmune diseases (inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Neurological conditions (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy, Traumatic Brain Injury)
  • Metabolic syndromes (Diabetes, Obesity)
  • Neuropsychiatric illnesses (Autism, ADHD, PTSD)
  • Gut disorders (Colitis, Crohn’s)
  • Skin diseases (Acne, Dermatitis, Psoriasis)

One of the strongest scientific evidence of CBD’s effectiveness is in treating childhood epilepsy syndromes such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically do not respond to anti-seizure medications. After numerous studies, CBD proved to reduce the number of seizures and in some cases, prevent them from happening altogether. The evidence was so compelling that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the first-ever cannabis-derived medicine for these two conditions, called Epidiolex. Amongst the ingredients — cannabidiol.
