Supplements- Yay or Nay?

There is a discussion going on over the usefulness of supplements. Some swear by them, swallowing entire cups of vitamins and minerals with every meal, morning noon and night. Others think all you are doing is making expensive waste, or as Sheldon from Big Bang Theory put it, “What you’re buying here are the ingredients for very expensive urine.” Whatever your opinion of supplements is, without trying something first, an opinion is little more then a fairy tale.

Taking suplements on their own is not very helpful. The trick to supplements is supplementing (see? see how that works? LOL) you regular meals and dietary intake. Let’s say you are having a particularly stressful day and just want to sleep, but there is no way the sandman is visiting tonight with your mind running around in circles. So instead of taking a sedative or a sleep aide, why not try an herbal supplement. Melatonin does wonders as does Valerian. Plus in general [Read more…]

Run for the Planet

National Geographic Kids has launched a new campaign to try and break not one, but TWO, Guinness World Records. The program is called Run for the Planet, and it is an effort to encourage children to do something good for both their health and the environment.

  • The first record they are going after is the longest shoe chain. Participants are encouraged to send in used athletic shoes, which will be tied together to break the record and then recycled into athletic surfaces, such as basketball courts and running tracks. This record [Read more…]

Should I Buy My Contact Lenses Online?

In this new-fangled world of instant gratification and quick fix solutions to our daily problems, it seems strange that there hasn’t been a better alternative to having to go to the shop or the local chemist to pick up your daily disposable contact lenses – until now!

Did you know that it’s now possible to buy your contact lenses online? Modern innovations in technology mean that you can order whatever kind of contact lenses you need direct from your home via the internet and because you’re dealing directly with the distributor and not the retailer, you can potentially save hundreds of pounds a year. No matter what brand you prefer or what style you enjoy most, you can find literally everything you need online.

Combined with this is the fact that retailers such as supermarkets and high street pharmacies or chemists only order small amounts of stock to [Read more…]

My Week With @Nutrisystem #NSNation

Devil I am, I was at BlogHer this week, and you KNOW I was not using my Nutrisystem. It just didn’t happen. With pretty much everything being a lucnh, brunch, breakfast, or party of some sort- yeah, it just didn’t work out. The good thing? It involved a whole lot of walking, all over NYC, and I still lost 2 pounds, LOL. So I am putting this one on the win column.

Losing Weight with #NSNation @Nutrisystem

Why is it so much easier to put weight ON then take it off? BLAH. This week was my son’s birthday- and the devil I am, I ate ice cream cake. LOL. Cest la vie, it was worth it. Maybe not. But SHHHH, I ate it anyway 😛 It’s been a wild week, and I have not been to the gym as often as I usually go. Between that and the cake? I will count my .5 weight loss as a score, and next week will be better.

I am not going to drive myself nuts about it- stuff happens, and last week was a good week. What can one do. I didn’t get this way because I don’t like to eat, right? It’s a battle, and sometimes I lose. Whatevs, as long as [Read more…]

Healthy Alternatives to Junk Food for Kids Lunches

While most kids will put up with a sandwich and a piece of fruit in their lunch box,
they probably go for the “good” stuff first when the bell rings to announce the lunch hour.
This means that they’re filling up on chips, soda, candy, and whatever else you put in as
extras before they ever reach for the healthy items that are actually going to give them
some nutrients and offer the sustained energy they’ll need to make it through the end of
the school day. Of course, the reason for this is that the high volume of sugar, salt, and
fat in these items makes them very tasty, and our brains are programmed to stimulate
pleasure centers. If you put that stuff in your child’s lunch, he’s sure to eat it first. Sadly,
school lunches are not much better, with low-cost and less-than-fresh options generally
populating the assembly line of slop. So what can concerned parents do to ensure that
their kids are eating healthy? Here are a couple of options.

For starters, stop buying junk! You might think that it’s not so bad if your kid has it
once in a while, but the truth is that these substances are addictive. You’ve no doubt
heard the Lays potato chips catchphrase: No one can eat just one! This is because it
takes very little exposure for our bodies to begin craving the instant energy boost that
often accompanies snack foods and drinks. And the crash that follows all too soon only
makes us want more. Soon other, healthier foods become less desirable. But in your
home you have the power to control what your kids are eating. [Read more…]

Goal Weight Attempt with #NSNation @Nutrisystem

Most of you know I have been trying to lose weight for about a year and a half now, and I was doing a pretty good job of it for about a year. Then, I got sick. Like, for real sick, not just the flu sick. All those medications do some terrible things to your body, and while I didn’t gain back all my weight- far from it- I did put some back on, and certainly didn’t lose any more. My muscle tone is down as well, and I have some more work to do. YAY. (ha.)

What to do? Go back to what worked really well for me, Nutrisystem and regular exercise. It’s not going to be easy, I am not in perfect health yet- but nothing worth having is ever easy, is it? My heath is worth fighting for, and hey- I still want to look good! [Read more…]
