Family Health Resolutions for 2012

Though New Year’s has come and gone, it isn’t too late to make resolutions that have to do with
the health of you and your family. In fact, the best way to include your children is to make healthy
resolutions seem fun. Here is a list of a few ways you can increase the overall health of your family this
year and have a good time doing it.

Wish list. Begin by sitting down with your family and coming up with a list of healthy, interactive
activities you can all do. Involving your kids in the process gives them some authority about the
direction these healthy resolutions are going to take, which means they are more likely to actually care
about keeping them.

Organization. It’s easy to fall back on old (and often bad) habits when you come home and find that
your pantry and/or freezer are totally disorganized, and so you whip up a frozen pizza or something
quick and easy out of a box. You’ll make healthier choices if you plan a menu in advance. This also
gives you the advantage of stocking your fridge and pantry with healthy alternatives. If your kids are
old enough, give them the opportunity to help out with dinner or allowing them to cook it themselves
(just keep an eye on the ingredients they plan to use!) Reorganizing your pantry allows you to remove
temptations like unhealthy snack foods that may be lurking on the shelves.

Sack lunch. Everyone in the house can be in on this plan, which is cost effective and healthier than
eating in the school cafeteria [Read more…]

How to Find Low-Cost Dental Care for Your Family

Even with insurance, the expense of medical and dental care for a family can be high. First there is the
cost of insurance to contend with, and while you will certainly pay a lower premium if your employer
offers benefits, you will either pay more for the best policy or opt for lower monthly costs and likely find
yourself paying out-of-pocket down the road (thanks to restrictions and deductibles). And if you don’t
have access to work-related health benefits, you’re probably going to find yourself on the hook for a lot
more, either for insurance, care, or both. So if you’re one of the many adults looking for a way to get
your family the dental care they need for less, here are a few options you may want to consider.

1. Clinical trials. By simply searching on ClinicalTrials.gov you may be able to volunteer to
participate in professionally run studies dealing with certain oral issues. You may even receive
treatment free (or at least at a drastically reduced cost). Of course, you won’t likely be able to
go for your annual cleaning in this way, but if you have some kind of serious dental problem that
is going to cost you some major dough, this could be a way to get the lion’s share covered while
receiving cutting-edge treatment.

2. Dental schools. This is a safer bet for your average dental issues. There are likely several in your
area and they are always looking for volunteers to help students get their practice hours and
take practical exams. So whether you need a cleaning, a filling, a root canal, or a tooth removed
(or replaced), this is a good way to get it done for a lot less. And don’t feel like you’re going to
get stuck with a second-rate [Read more…]

EatSmart Kitchen Scale Reivew and C0NTEST!

The holidays are coming along faster and faster. Holidays bring around family and very good food. I can’t wait for dessert myself. There are always so many wonderful treats it is very difficult to stick to diets and such. MY opinion is, one day will not hurt that badly, just do not go too nuts and just right back on the diet train right after the holidays.

To help with this consider measuring out portions and not overdoing it. The EatSmart kitchen scale is prefect for this. With proper portions just about anything is OK. Am I saying use a quarter stick of butter on a bagel is a perfectly healthy meal? No, I am not. Half a teaspoon of butter on a half of a whole grain bagel along with some fruit and low fat milk would make a decent breakfast. But all portions should be measured out to keep from over doing it. Take a look at this scale over at EatSmart. It is small easy to use, exact and runs on AAA batteries. These batteries are included with the scale as well, a nice touch. Another great usage of this scale, is postage calculation. That extra ounce can cost a pretty penny when sending out box after box to relatives around the country. Maybe not what they had in mind- but the hubs keeps stealing it to do this….Men.

EatSmart has also been doing a donation drive this year titled Charity of the Month. For every click through and purchase on Amazon through their site a certain percentage of the purchase is donated to a different charity each month. December’s charity is the Make A Wish Foundation. I think this is a great idea and gets consumers donating without really changing much.

One of you can win this scale! Here is how to enter-

Guest Post- managing your child’s fever

As a mother, you have probably experienced waking up in the middle of the night to the whimper from your child’s room, calling for ‘Mommy’. As you check in on your child, you find that his forehead is warm and quickly discover that he has a fever. Though your immediate reaction may be of worry and concern, you question what you should do next.
Thus, this cold and flu season, in an effort to help ease parents’ anxiety, Children’s Advil is launching an educational Fever Relief program that highlights common misconceptions and offers helpful tips, when it comes to managing your child’s fever.
Accordingly, two new national surveys of parents and pediatricians revealed that a majority of parents feel anxious, helpless and fearful when facing a child’s fever and frequently make mistakes when treating their child. Findings from the “Dose of Reality” survey by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, makers of Children’s [Read more…]

And This Week on #NSNation @Nutrisystem

I have just about nothing to say this week, as I was on travel. I ate only my Nutrisystem breakfast bars, but I ate regular food for the rest of the day, as I had mentioned was the plan in last weeks update. I do though, bring my workout DVDs and resistance bands, and between that and all the walking that travel usually brings, I can usually keep the food-monster in check, LOL. I had a .5 lb gain this week. Cest la vie. I will knock it off by next week, by going back to my regular diet and exercise program. Life is life, and that can get in the way of losing weight sometimes. I’m not going to go nuts about it, since I know that I will get there, and I know I am doing alright (especially considering [Read more…]

Warning Signs of Vision Problems in Children

Many parents don’t realize that their infants, toddlers, and school-age children can be just as susceptible
to vision problems as adults. The major difference is that if these issues go untreated, their vision
may never develop normally (even with later treatments). For this reason it is imperative that parents
be aware of the warning signs that indicate ocular issues. Although you might think that a tendency
to run into things, misjudge distances, and topple over is natural at some stages of growth (and it is,
for most toddlers), it’s better to be safe than sorry. You should not only be aware of stages of visual
development in children, but have a good idea of what could be abnormal. So here are just a few signs
to look for if you fear that your child may develop vision problems.

To begin with, you should know that infants don’t see very well. They’re born without a fully developed
sense of sight that continues to mature over several months. Your child will likely see quite well at 3-
6 months of age, but their visual senses may take up to eight months to form fully. And over the next
few years it is imperative that they learn to interact with their environment through visual cues. If their
eyesight is somehow impaired during that time, it may never return to full strength. So it behooves you
to watch for certain markers that they’re suffering from vision loss.

And there are plenty of indicators that something is wrong. Cataracts, while relatively rare in children,
are by no means unheard of. Some babies are born with these milky spots on their eyes while others
develop them in early childhood. Either way, they must be treated immediately [Read more…]

And This Week on #NSNation @Nutrisystem :) 30 LBS GONE!

OK, so last week was kind of a wash- with nothing lost, and .5 gained (cest la vie! ‘Twas Thanksgiving, lol)
But hey- guess what. My total weight loss with this weeks 2.5 lb weight loss is……30 lbs! (Since on Nutrisystem).

(I’ll get you a better picture for next week- it’s rough with winter- too many bulky clothes to see what you lost!) BUT I got back into my favorite Pea Coat, that I have not worn since before my son was born- I took a photo of that today, so I will post it next week 🙂

Yeah, man! OK, so I didn’t even really try to stick with the Nutrisystem for Thanksgiving- but I knew I wouldn’t, so I only did Nutrisystem breakfasts and I did a lot, a lot of exercise last week. This past week I have gone back to my regular schedule, [Read more…]
