November is National Adoption Month #NAM15 #perfectparent

November is National Adoption Month, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, AdoptUSKids, and the Ad Council are spreading the word about and encouraging prospective parents to adopt older youth from foster care.

The theme for National Adoption Month is, “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family.” That’s because older children and youth still have many big milestones in their life they need a family for.

There are 415,000 children in the U.S. foster care system and 108,000 are waiting to be adopted. AdoptUSKids’ maintains a national photo listing service for children waiting to be adopted. Since the project launched in 2002, more than 25,000 children who were once photo listed on adoptuskids.org have been adopted and nearly 38,000 families have registered to adopt through the website.  Nevertheless, older youth are disproportionately represented – approximately 41 percent of children and youth photo listed on adoptuskids.org are between 15 and 18 years old, but only 17 percent of those adopted have been in this age group

Older youth and teens have lower adoption rates than younger children, and they often wait longer to be adopted. But no matter their age, all kids need a supportive, loving home and the teenage years are a critical period for growth. The new TV PSAs, which were created for the campaign probono, portray a dad giving advice to his teenage daughter after her first breakup, and a mom giving her son a haircut at home. The humorous, lighthearted scenarios aim to overcome fears adoptive parents may have regarding their own imperfections. The PSAs end with the tagline, “You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent,” reassuring prospective parents that even if they are not ‘perfect’, they have the ability to provide the stability and security that older youth in foster care need and deserve.

The PSAs direct audiences to visit adoptuskids.org or to call 1-888-200-4005 (English) or 1-877-236-7831 (Spanish) to receive the latest information about the foster care system and the adoption process.

For more information about adoption, or about becoming an adoptive parent to a child from foster care, please visit www.adoptuskids.org or visit the campaign’s communities on Facebook and Twitter.

Why Older Youth?

  • All of us – and that includes older youth in foster care who are waiting to be adopted – need and want families throughout life to support us and to share important life events. Learning to drive a car, applying for higher education, and birthday and holiday celebrations are just a few examples of the times in life we need and want to share with family.
  • Older youth are overrepresented in the foster care population, as they generally wait longer to be adopted, and have lower overall adoption rates.
  • On adoptuskids.org, roughly 41 percent of the children and youth actively photolisted are between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. About 58 percent are male. (Most recent stats as of May 31, 2015)
  • Families who adopt older youth, are providing them with the support and stability of a family during a critical period of normal adolescent concerns and additional self-identity issues.

Some of the Misperceptions about Adoption from Foster Care:

  • Adoption is expensive.  Unlike the private adoption of an infant or adopting internationally, there are virtually no costs associated with adoption from the US child welfare system. In addition, the vast majority of youth adopted from foster care are also eligible for monthly adoption assistance up to the level of the foster care rate.
  • You have to be married. You do not have to be married to adopt in most states. Many children have been very successfully adopted by single parents. Single-parent families accounted for 29 percent of all adoptions from foster care in 2014 (AFCARS).
  • You have to have a college degree. Having a high school diploma or college education is not required. What is important is that you are stable, flexible, and compassionate, and that you have a good sense of humor. Most importantly, you must have the support and commitment to raise a child and to be there for him throughout his life.
  • You have to own a home and each child has to have their own room. You can rent your home or live in an apartment or a mobile home so long as your living situation is a stable one.
  • You have to be of child-bearing age to adopt. Experienced parents and empty-nesters are encouraged to adopt. In most instances, you’re eligible to adopt regardless of age, income, marital status or sexual orientation.
  • You can only adopt a child who is the same race and ethnicity as you. Federal law prohibits the delay or denial of an adoptive placement based on the race or ethnicity of a child in U.S. foster care and the prospective parent or parents who are seeking to adopt them. The only exception to this law is the adoption of Native American children where special considerations apply.
  • You can’t adopt if you’re in the military. Military families stationed overseas and within the U.S. are eligible to adopt children from the U.S. foster care system.

Family Easter Outfits at Kohl’s

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe, and with Easter looming, it’s a great reason to drag even the most resistant men in your life out for at least a small upgrade, true?  We recently headed to Kohl’s to see what we could find for both of the men in my life to wear for the holiday this year.  The smaller one is usually pretty compliant, it’s the bigger one that can be somewhat of a fighter, lol. They both agreed, however, on getting new pants and nice shirts.  We got them things they could wear not only on Easter, but for future events.

20150314_135829Now that I look at it, it seems they are almost matching, though not intentionally- one blue on top and beige on the bottom, the other reversed, ha. My son decided he wanted to go in shorts (can you tell we’ve had it with winter and he’s looking forward to warm weather?) and my husband decided to get new jeans, which he could use. They both picked out their outfits without the other one seeing- my son was with me, and the husband was in the men’s department all by himself- I was amused when I saw how similar their selections were when we met in the boy’s department 😉

When Your Teen is Drifting Away

You’ve been a dedicated parent, always involved in your son’s life. You are his biggest champion, the one who will be by his side through thick and thin. That’s why it troubles you to no end when you see him making poor choices. You’ve done everything in your power to lead by example. However, it’s like the old expression, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” If your teen is not following the right path in his life, you can talk until you’re blue in the face. It still might not do any good. Try some tips to turn the situation around.

Cut Off the Extras
If your teen is being irresponsible, take away privileges. That means no car, spending money, computer, or cell phone. Cutting him off will show that you mean what you say. Make it hit home that the extras in life must be earned. Adults don’t get hand-outs that they don’t deserve. The same holds true for your son. He may get his act together and head in the right direction once more.

Marvel Universe Live

When can you step into the world of super heroes in the flesh? Of course, you need explosions and action, fights and excitement, but all the while in a safe  and fun environment. The answer to the question is with Marvel Universe Live. This new live action show features The Avengers, Shield, Spider man, and even a few X-Men join in the adventure. This makes the show big and action packed, and of course not to be missed by any comic book or hero fan.

8 17 14 012The story of Marvel Universe Live is easy enough to explain, the heroes must split up into teams to save the planet from some of Marvel universes fiercest foes, including Hydra, AIM, Lizard, Rhino, and Red Skull. But fear not the super hero bill is quite large two including Captain America, Captain Marvel, Thor, Iron Man, Spider Man, Hulk, Wolverine and Storm to name a few. All of which play key roles in saving the day. As the group splits to various parts of the world the action splits up too, from secret laboratories to snow capped mountains to the Statue of Liberty the scenes are big and feel like you are in the action. There is lots of fighting, lots of explosions and also motorcycles and tricks. One of the most memorable scenes would have to be Spider man and Thor at the Statue of Liberty. Not only is the statue represented but the high flying action between Spider-Man and his foes are represented in a big way including flying gliders, web slinging and of course Thor’s famous thunder hammer.

On Board the MSC Divina

Disclosure- I received the below trip in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own and honest. Please see “Disclose” tab for more info.
Re Up Yellow Phone 219

We enjoyed our time on board the MSC Divina.  Boarding was much faster and easier then I thought it would be (one thing I learned- they will tell you that you are not allowed to bring your luggage on board with you- this is not true.  If you want to bring a bag so you can change clothes or medical equipment with you, you can.  We waited hours for our luggage to be delivered- you live, you learn!)   We checked into our room with no problem, and also signed up our son for Kids Club, with the staff making sure he got his proper ID bracelet and was placed into the right age group.  The staff was all decked out for the occasion, which my son was much amused by.

Our balcony room was about 150 square feet, plus the bathroom and balcony.  The balcony had two deck chairs and a table on it as well. In the room was one European King Bed and a pull out sofabed that my 6 year old son used.  During the day, it was folded up to use as a couch and seating space.  There was a mini fridge in the room, which you can purchase items from OR you can upgrade your package to include unlimited minibar use.  I suggest it if you can, it makes things very easy and convenient.  You can choose which package you get- if you have kids, I would suggest the one that is also “ice cream inclusive”, lol.

The balcony was our favorite place to spend time while in the room- which was honestly not often.  There was too much to do on the ship- or off it on docked days.  The bathroom has a small shower which also has a laundry line in it for bathing suits to be hung to dry, which is quite convenient. There is a TV in the room, as well as a spacious closet with hangers and drawers, with a safe you can lock inside as well. Your life vests are on top of the wardrobe, and you are required to do a “safety drill” the first day on board to make sure you and your family know how to properly use them and where to go in case of an emergency.

Adventure Aquarium in NJ

This winter has been interminable, but there is plenty to do indoors.  Just a short drive from NY, NJ, or PA, is the Adventure Aquarium- formerly the Camden Aquarium.  There are many things to see and do inside, from new exhibits, to interactive touch pools, and educational experiences.  You can get a hot lunch there, bring your own and grab a table, and spend the whole day inside.  (There are also outdoor penguin enclosures, but bring your coats! Baby, it’s cold outside.)

2 25 14 toys and aquarium 032

The latest exhibit, running through March, is all about our favorite amphibian- frogs.  Everything and anything frog related can be found here- and your children can even see (and touch, if they are brave!) a tiny poison froggie.  Don’t worry- it’s harmless to people.  Unless you eat it.  So, don’t.   🙂

Featuring more than 8,500 aquatic species throughout two million gallons of water, Adventure Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world to exhibit hippos and also home to the largest collection of sharks on the east coast – including a Great Hammerhead SharkLocated just minutes from downtown Philadelphia on the Delaware waterfront, visitors can get up close and personal with sharks and stingrays they can touch. They can also explore one-of-a-kind exhibits, including hippos, penguins and a shark tunnel.

The NJ of Adventure Aquarium on the Delaware Waterfront’s newest exhibit, Frogs: Natures Messenger hops on to the scene and opens to the public, bringing the opportunity to come face-to-face with frogs of all types, sizes and vivid colors. More than 20 species of frogs and amphibians will invade the Aquarium through April — from the red-eyed tree frog, the poison dart frog, the tiger-legged monkey frog and the enormous African bullfrog, there will be something for everyone to croak about.

Fun Things to Bring on a Camping Trip

Once you have the tent and sleeping bags covered, you will want to turn your attention to other camping items that will help makes your trip a success.

Here are some of my current favorite take alongs.

 flashlight for kids

Kids Flashlights

One of the first things you will want to think about is lighting. When it gets dark, your kids will not likely be thrilled with that. Lanterns around the tent (and inside as you get ready for bed) as well as flashlights are going to be not only needed, but a huge comfort to your little campers.

Camping Lanterns

Children will love the HABA Terra Kids Lantern, and so will mom and dad. Kids never remember to turn off lights (or toys) and this won’t be a problem with this lantern, since it requires no batteries and charges when the child winds up it’s attached crank. They can keep their light shining all night long (or at least until they fall asleep) with the HABA lantern. It also features very bight, easy to see by LED lights, a compass (perfect for little explorers) and a padded handle with neoprene cover, attachable karabiner, and alarm whistle for safety, and is extremely well built and sturdy.

 camping with kids

For exploring and nighttime, Melissa and Doug have a kid-friendly flashlight that will make any child smile. The Bibi Bee Kid’s Flashlight will be an instant hit, and will chase away any fears of darkness. It has a cute handle just right for little hands, and a happy face that can scare away nighttime monsters. It takes AA batteries, which to access require you to press down a tab and also remove a small Phillips screw so that you can you unscrew the cap. These are preventatives to keep the child from opening the flashlight and removing the batteries.

Meet Me at @SesamePlace #ThemePark

One of my son’s highlights has been his recent trip to Sesame Place in Buck’s County, PA. I grew up with Sesame Street, and as a teacher I love the educational, social, and cultural values it helps to instill. As a parent- I love it, too! There are versions of Sesame Street all over the world- from Russia to Mexico. Something about knowing that this sweet, educational show unites kids globally (literally) really touches me- and even more so now that I myself am a mom, teacher, and travel enthusiast. You can’t see the world until you go out and experience it- start young, and make a little global citizen. But I digress!

We had so much fun at the theme park, there are all sorts of fun rides- and for once, they are ALL aimed at little ones.
